Stowting is a hamlet that lies between the towns of Canterbury, Folkestone, Ashford and Hythe in the county of Kent in the south east corner of England. Stowting in Anglo-Saxon means a 'place characterized by a mound'.[1] It was known in the time of the Doomsday book as Stotinges and Estotinges, and in later records it was called Stutinges, and Stowling.[2]
The scattered village stands at the southern foot of a chalk hill, part of the North Downs and is located beside a chalk spring. At the top of Stowting Hill lies Stowting Common. The Roman Road of Stone Street lies about a mile to the east.[2]
The Manor of Stowting was given by one Egelric Bigge, to Christ Church, in Canterbury in the year 1044. The village's own church is 13th century with many later additions and alterations. It is dedicated to St Mary and is flint with stone dressings with a flint tower.[2] It is a grade 2 listed building.[3] Just to the west of the church is the remains of a castle mound. this is considered to be a particularly fine example of a Norman Motte and Bailey castle.[4]
In 1947, a Douglas C-47A crashed on the hillside above the village, killing eight of the 16 people on board.[5][6]
Stowting has a Church Of England Primary School adjacent to the church. It has one pub, The Tiger originally called the Anchor and renamed in 1985 , which dates back to the 1600s.
Stowting Cricket Club has been established since 1895, and plays at Dawes Field, near Stowting CofE Primary School. Stowting Cricket Club play in the Premier Division of the Invicta Cricket League and in Division 4 of the Kent Village Cricket League.
