The Blues Giant (or also known as Stone Crazy!) is the fourth studio album by Buddy Guy.
History
From the mid 70s to the late 80s was a very hard period for the Blues musicians. Only one Buddy Guy studio album released in the 70s ("Hold That Plane" was recorded in 1970, released in 1972), until he and his recent band entered into the Concoret Studios in Toulouse, France. He was pleased to record an album by the french producer, Didier Tricard. To release that album, Tricard founded a new label, which was named Isabel by Buddy Guy about her mother.
Recordings
They recorded 13 songs for two different albums only in one day, on October 31, 1979. One of them was released as a Buddy Guy album in France and in the U.K., titled "The Blues Giant", the other one was released as a Junior Wells album, titled "Pleading the Blues". Junior Wells was played only on his album, but the other musicians are the same on both albums. Buddy played all lead guitars, his little brother Phil Guy played rhythm guitars, and a youngster rhythm section played behind them, J. W. Williams on bass, Ray "Killer" Allison on drums. Track 2 "Are You Losing Your Mind" is an alternate version of Buddy's great hit "Stone Crazy". It was retitled due to copyright problems.
Releases
Originally released on the french label Isabel in 1979, titled "The Blues Giant", in France and in the U.K., but alternate covers.[1] First released in the U.S. in 1981 by Alligator Records, titled "Stone Crazy".[2] Released in Brazil in 1988, with an alternate cover. First released on CD in 1990, in the US by Alligator (titled "Stone Crazy"), in the UK by Isabel (titled "The Blues Giant"). Released on CD in France by Isabel in 2002 with an alternate cover, but titled "Stone Crazy".
