High Steward of Scotland

Part of the High Steward's role was managing the King's finances. Medieval financiers used chequered cloths to help them count coins, hence the chequered band in the High Steward's arms

The title of High Steward or Great Steward was given in the 12th century to Walter Fitzalan, whose descendants became the House of Steward/Stuart. In 1371, the last High Steward inherited the throne, and thereafter the title of High Steward of Scotland has been held as a subsidiary title to that of Baron of Renfrew & Duke of Rothesay, held by the heir-apparent. Thus, currently, The Prince of Wales is High Steward of Scotland, sometimes known as the Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.
