Stephen "Steve" Yates is a former White House official, Idaho Republican Party chairman[1], and current candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Idaho.[2]

Overview

Yates is a former White House official and Idaho Republican Party Chairman. He is a national security expert with a strong focus on US-Asian relations. He currently owns his own international policy consulting firm. Yates lives in Idaho Falls with his wife, Diana, and two children.

Early Life

Yates was born on August 25, 1968 in Olney, Maryland. From 1987-89 served a Mission (LDS Church) to Taiwan, where he became fluent in Mandarin and learned extensively about US-Asian relations.

In 1993, Yates graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park with a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese language and literature. He later received a Master’s degree in China Studies and International Economics from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.

Career

From 1991 to 1996, Yates served as an international affairs analyst at the Department of Defense. From there, he became a Senior Policy Analyst at the Heritage Foundation. At the age of 32, Yates became Vice President Dick Cheney’s Deputy National Security Advisor, serving from 2001 - 2005.

Since 2006, Yates has owned and operated his own international policy and consulting firm called DC International Advisory, focusing on assessing political risk and opportunity for investors.

Political Involvement

National Campaigns

Yates became involved in politics early in his career. He advised the Bush-Cheney 2000 Asia team. He later served as senior Asia advisor for the Rudy Giuliani presidential campaign in 2007-08. During the 2012 election, he was senior campaign advisor and director of national security staff for Newt Gingrich.

Idaho Republican Party

In August, 2014, Yates was elected chair of the Idaho Republican Party, and was reelected in June, 2016.

Yates was on the 2016 Republican National Convention platform committee, and served as subcommittee co-chair for national security.

During his time at the Idaho Republican Party, Yates led two successful statewide general election campaigns keeping every Congressional and Constitutional office Republican, and expanding Republican supermajorities in Idaho’s House and Senate.

Lieutenant Governor

Yates is currently a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Idaho for elections in 2018.
