Stephen Murphy (civil servant)
Stephen "Steve" Murphy (born 1957) is an ex-DEA agent who, along with Javier Peña, was one of the lead investigators in the manhunt of Colombian drug smuggler Pablo Escobar.[1]
Biography
Murphy was born in Tennessee in 1957. However, he grew up in West Virginia, where he graduated from Princeton High School in 1974 and attended West Virginia University for a year. He transferred to Bluefield State College, from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice in 1981.[1] He joined Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in mid-1980s and started working in Miami. He was later transferred to Bogotá, Colombia, where he played an important role in the killing of Escobar. He returned to the United States in 1994, and in 2013 he retired from the DEA to become the head of a private consulting firm.
Popular culture
He is one of the main characters in Netflix TV series Narcos, in which his character is portrayed by Boyd Holbrook.[2]
