Stephen Morgan is a British Labour Party politician[1] who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth South since the 2017 general election.[2]
Morgan is from Fratton, a district of Portsmouth; where he attended Priory School and Portsmouth College in the city. He then went on to study politics and sociology at the University of Bristol before gaining a master's degree in politics at Goldsmiths in London.[3]
After graduating he worked at various departments at Portsmouth City Council, before becoming Head of Community Engagement for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.[4] In 2015 he became CEO of Basingstoke Voluntary Action.[5][6] This role allowed him to run for public office and in May 2016 he became the councillor for the Charles Dickens ward on Portsmouth City Council. Later that year he became the Leader of the Portsmouth Labour Group.[7]
On 8 June 2017, a snap general election which was called by British Prime Minister Theresa May was held, where he defeated the incumbent Conservative MP Flick Drummond for the Portsmouth South constituency by a majority of 1,554 and a swing of 9.4% to Labour.[8] This makes him the first member of his party to represent the constituency since its creation in 1918. In his victory speech Morgan said, "Portsmouth had voted for hope".[9]
