Steffen Roth (born August 8, 1976 in Würzburg) is an academic and author on management, economics, and sociology. He is currently Professor of Strategic Management at La Rochelle Business School, France, and Professor of Sociology at Yerevan State University, Armenia.
Academic Background
Roth earned his Diploma in Sociology from the Chemnitz University of Technology in 2002, his PhD in Economics and Management (Dr. rer. pol) from the same university in 2010,[1] and his PhD in Sociology from the University of Geneva in 2013.[2]
Career
From 2010-2011, Roth was Visiting Professor and Open Society Institute and Soros Foundations Network Academic Fellow at the Yerevan State University Department of Sociology, where he still is Affiliate Professor. He was also Visiting Professor at the Copenhagen Business School Department of Management, Philosophy and Politics (2012) as well as the University of Cagliari Department of Economics (2012). From 2012 to 2016 and 2017, respectively, he was tenured Assistant Professor of Management and Organization at the ESC Rennes School of Business[3] and Visiting Professor at the International University of Rabat.
Research
Being a third generation social systems theorist influenced by the works of Niklas Luhmann, Roth's major research is on theories and applications of functional differentiation in (post-) modern societies.[4] Roth was among the first to apply culturomics in sociology, with one major result of this research being that the (self-) definition of modern societies as capitalist or economized may be inappropriate.[4][5][6]
Roth is furthermore engaged in research on multifunctional organizations and markets.[7][8][9] He also published on (social) innovation as well as on next strategies for post-capitalism[10] and degrowth.[9]
Service to the Scientific Community
Roth is ambassador and mentor of the European Academy of Management EURAM Early Career Colloquium and Network,[11] full member of the German Academic Association for Business Research as well as member of the International Academic Advisory Board of the New Research on Digital Societies (NERDS) research center at Kozminski University Warsaw, Poland, the Forschungskolleg Gesellschaft und Kontingenz, Berlin, Germany, and the International Academic Advisory Board of the Amrita Center for Responsible Innovations and Sustainable Enterprises, Amrita University, India.
He is Associate Editor of the CABS-listed journal Kybernetes and member of the editorial board of the ERA-listed Journal Cybernetics and Human Knowing.
