Star Radio North East is an Independent Local Radio station serving Darlington, County Durham, Northallerton, Richmond, Thirsk and surrounding areas. It was owned and operated by UKRD Group (Until 31st March 2017) when it was purchased by View TV Group. Star broadcasts from studios at Radio House in Darlington.
History
Following UKRD's take over of The Local Radio Company, Star Radio North East was launched on 2 November 2009 formed when the new owners merged Alpha 103.2, Minster Northallerton and Durham FM into one station.[1] Originally, the Alpha name was to be used making the stations Alpha Northallerton and Alpha Durham.[2]
UKRD announced on the 29th March 2017, that they would be handing back the Star Radio licenses back to Ofcom. The station would cease broadcasting on 31 March 2017. UKRD further advised they had asked Ofcom to transfer the Northallerton License to sister station Minister FM .[3] Ofcom Confirmed the transfer of the Northallerton License to Minster on the 4th April 2017. UKRD announced on the 31st March 2017, the station's 11th hour reprieve from closure. The CEO of UKRD William Rogers advised a deal had been reached with View TV to secure the future of the station effective from 31st March 2017. [5]
Programming
All of Star Radio North East's programming is produced and broadcast from its Darlington studios. Presenter-led programming airs from 6am-2pm and 3-7pm on weekdays, 6am-2pm and 3-6pm on Saturdays and 6am-2pm and 3-7pm on Sunday. All other output is automated.[6]
News
Star Radio North East broadcasts hourly local news bulletins from 6am-6pm on weekdays and 8am-1pm at weekends, with headlines on the half-hour during weekday breakfast and drivetime shows. National bulletins from Sky News Radio are carried every hour at all other times.[7]
