The Stadtbahn Dortmund is a light rail system in the German city of Dortmund and is integrated in the Rhine-Ruhr Stadtbahn network. Its network consists of eight lines.

It operates on 75.0 kilometres (46.6 mi) of route (of which 20.5 kilometres (12.7 mi) are underground in tunnels, with the other 54.5 kilometres (33.9 mi) being above-ground in dedicated rights-of-way),[3] serving 125 stations (24 of which are underground).[2]

The underground is part of an integrated transport network that includes trams, buses and a suspension railway at the university.[4]

Network

The railway network is separated into three 'cardinal tracks' (Stammstrecken): The Stammstrecke I (opened between 1983 and 1984), which is home to the U41, U45, U47 and U49 lines, connects stations on a north-south-axis between the Leopoldstraße and Markgrafenstraße stations (including the main station). Lines U42 and U46 operate on the Stammstrecke II (Opened between 1976 and 2002) between Brunnenstraße and Stadtgarten and offer connections from the south-west to the north-east of Dortmund. These lines utilize Stadtbahnwagen-B cars and have high level platforms at most stops.

The U41 and U47 rail lines connect with bus 440, which travels to Dortmund Airport.[5]
