St. Ignatius of Loyola College, Las Palmas, was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1917 and has grown to cover infant through baccalaureate and middle technical training. It is located on the Spanish Grand Canary Island of Las Palmas.

History

Holy Family, the first school in the city, was opened in 1697 in a small building, "the Seminary," that remains at 15/17 Dr. Chill Street. It is next to St. Francis Borgia Church which opened in 1754. In 1767, with the expulsion of the Jesuits by Charles III, the school closed and the diocese acquired the building. In 1852, at the invitation of the bishop, the Jesuits returned to teaching in "the Seminary". In the "glorious revolution" of 1858 the Jesuits were again expelled, to return at the request of the bishop in 1917 and to occupy again the building at 15/17 Dr. Chill Street. A new seaside building was built in 1924, vacated during the Republican Revolution in 1932, and again opened in 1939. A new building was built on the same property and occupied in phases after 1974.

Occupational training courses began in 1994. In 2005 new facilities were opened for the baccalaureate and training cycles and for early childhood education.[1]

The school is located in the old part of the city, within walking distance of the Vegueta Market and the Cathedral of Santa Ana. It accommodates from first year of infant education through baccalaureate and Professional training of middle degree. Two of the expressed aims of the College are to impart proficiency in foreign languages and to instill in students compassion for the most disadvantaged.[2]

Programs

The College offers English immersion programs,[3] including Summer in England[4] and programs in Canada and Ireland.[5] Special English classes are offered for which Trinity College London offers a certificate.[6]

Dancing classes are offered for adults, and for children in a variety of styles: La Movida Madrileña, funky, jazz, hip-hop, and others including flashmob dancing. Dance workshops are at times open to those outside the school. Festivals have celebrated such diverse topics as Black music in the USA (Soul of Harlem, June 2015).[7]

The College has 2 football fields, a track, 2 basketball courts and handball courts.[8] Students have put on medal-winning performances in hockey and in women's artistic gymnastics.[9]
