St. Elizabeth Church and School (Van Nuys)

St. Elisabeth Church

St. Elisabeth Church and School is a Catholic church and elementary school located in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, California.[1] It is one of the oldest parishes in the San Fernando Valley, having been established in 1920. When the current Church was dedicated in 1948, it was the largest Catholic Church in the Valley.

St. Elisabeth Catholic School was founded by the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. The school opened its doors on September 11, 1928 located in the heart of Van Nuys. The school first stood as one two-story building with four classes and an auditorium.

In 2001 the Rogationist Fathers began the direction of St. Elisabeth Parish.

Hollywood connection

For years, St. Elizabeth's has been the home parish for many members of the Brown and McCann families living in the Los Angeles area. The most famous member of both families is actress/comedian Julie Brown, whose father, Leonard, worked for years at NBC and whose mother, Celia McCann-Brown, who is of Mexican descent herself, and has been a movie and television extra for years. Brown attended St. Elisabeth's before transferring to nearby Van Nuys High School, and she credits her years at St. Elisabeth's as the reason she went on to a successful comedy career. Brown has been married twice at St. Elizabeth's.
