"Spread Your Wings" is the eleventh episode of the seventh season and the 155th episode overall of the American sitcom Modern Family. It aired on January 13, 2016 on American Broadcasting Company (ABC). The episode is directed by James Bagdonas and written by Vanessa McCarthy and (Ryan Walls).[1]
Plot
Alex (Ariel Winter) welcomes Phil (Ty Burrell) for the first time since she came to Caltech. While Phil is absent, Claire (Julie Bowen), Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Luke (Nolan Gould) decide to get rid of the three ducks they have, since they ruin everything in their lives. But Claire decides against it after she realizes how much the ducks remind Phil of their own children. Phil has a similar experience while visiting Alex when she tells him that she does not want to participate in a ritual. Phil brings Alex necessary clothes in order to make her participate, which she agrees. By the time Haley, Luke and Claire go home, Phil has also a change of heart and helps them to get rid of the ducks.
Manny (Rico Rodriguez) joins Gloria (Sofía Vergara) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) who want to have heist pepper in their hot sauce. By making that, he also wants to prove to his mother that he can be a rebel rather that the goody two shoes boy whose people around him see. His plan seems to work, but on the other side, Cameron acts selfish by making decisions without Gloria’s opinion until he manages to understand that she wants him to create his own sauce without constantly ask for help.
At the same time, Jay (Ed O'Neill) helps Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) to organize Lilly’s (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) first sleepover with her Vietnamese fellows from a troupe dance, something that appears to be difficult since Mitchell and Cameron aren't always welcomed by Vietnamese parents. Mitchell decides at first to be the cool daddy but is unsuccessful, which prompts him to asks Jay to help him in order to make the girls as exhausted as possible. In order to do that, Mitchell and Jay ask Cameron and Gloria to make the girls bottle some hot sauce, much to a parent’s wrath. At the end, Jay manages to get his mission as every girl and Mitchell finally fell asleep.
