After Académica was founded in 1963, there had been around 100 matches that featured Sporting and Académica, there were also over 100 matches with the cup competitions.

In July 2009, the rivalry was taken to the national level in the finals. Sporting Praia won the first match and the second match ended in a draw goal, as they won a total of three goals, claimed their eighth title since independence.[1] The match was also the first in years to feature two clubs from the same island, football association and the city.

Football rivalry

The rivalry began before the 1970s in Cape Verde after the derbies of Boavista, Travadores and Vitória Praia.

Sporting Praia is one of the most successful football (sooccer) club in Cape Verde, having won about 35 official titles (13 national and 22 regional) compared to Académica's 8 official titles (1 colonial, 1 national and 6 regional). On the other hand, Sporting performed in African competitions (no Capeverdean team has ever won an African title). Their greatest success is the participation in the First Round in the 1992 African Cup of Champions Clubs and the 2009 CAF Champions League. Sporting appeared once in the 2001 CAF Cup Winners' Cup and did not exceed the preliminaries. Académica never appeared at the continental competitions.
