Sophie Bongers (born December 2, 1998),[1] better known by her stage name Sophie Francis, is a Dutch record producer, DJ and musician.[3][4][5][6][7] She is regarded as the "female Martin Garrix".[8]

Biography

Early life

Bongers was born on December 12, 1998.[1] She grew up in St Francis Bay, South Africa,[9][10] and later moved with her parents to Sint-Oedenrode, Netherlands.[11] From an early age, she had an interest in music. By the age of 9, she started playing the piano and singing along to every song.[12] By the age of 14, she had to do a school project,[13] developing a new skill during 9 months.[14] She went to a music school in Eindhoven where she began taking DJ lessons[15] and met new friends who already began producing music.[16][17][18]

Music career

Her first residency was at a small bar Het Pumpke in her hometown of Sint-Oedenrode,[10][17] when she was only 15 years old.[14] She began her career under the stage name "Sophie's Choice".[14] In the summer of 2015, she was signed to Always Management.[14][17] She also performed at BCM in Mallorca.[14] In October 2015, due to a trademark conflict, she changed her stage name to "Sophie Francis",[14] which is a tribute to St Francis Bay, a town in South Africa where she grew up.[19] In late 2015, she embarked on her first South Africa tour, performing at various festivals and clubs such as The Ruins Festival in St Francis Bay and The Coco Club in Cape Town, as well performing as an appearance on a national television. She then noticed that John Christian was announcing a new record label that supports new talents. Afterwards, she caught the attention of Christian by sending demos, and the two began working together to release Francis' music on Christian's record label Freeway Recordings.[14][17]

On February 29, 2016, she released "Drop of a Dime", her first single on Freeway Recordings.[20][21] The single was followed by "Up in This" in April,[22] which was described by EDMTunes as "a mainstage-ready banger", and as proving "why the likes of Ummet Ozcan and Quintino have already thrown her support".[23] She then released "Bad Boy" on Freeway Recordings.[24][25] On June 20, 2016, she released "Annihilate", her single as a free download which received over 2 million plays SoundCloud.[14][17] On September 23, 2016, she released "Walls", her first vocal track on Powerhouse Music.[14][17] The single gained significant radio play on Radio 538 in the Netherlands, among other stations and charted on the Dutch and Belgian national charts.[26][27] In October, she performed at the Amsterdam Dance Event for the first time.[28] She was also a guest at Giel on NPO 3FM.[28] On November 9, 2016, she was a guest and performed at Bij Igmar on SLAM!.[29] That same month, she released "Don't Stop" on Dirty Dutch Music.[30] In December, she performed at Glazen Huis in Breda.[31]

In January 2017, it was announced that Francis signed a deal with Spinnin' Records,[32][33] with whom she released a single titled "Without You" on February 17.[34][35] On March 2, 2017, she was a guest and performed at De Avondploeg on Radio 538.[36] That same month, she performed at Ultra Music Festival for the first time in Miami, Florida.[37] On April 27, 2017, she performed at AFAS Stadion in Alkmaar during SLAM! Koningsdag 2017.[38] A month later, she released the single "Lovedrunk" through Spinnin' Records.[39][40] At first there was confusion about the actual creator of the track. The single had been buzzing as an ID track for few weeks and peaked at number 17 on the DMC Buzz Chart prior to release, but it was revealed that the artist was Francis later that month.[41][42][43]
