Sophia, also spelled Sofia, is a female name derived from σοφία, the Greek word for "Wisdom". The name was used to represent the personification of wisdom.
Popularity
Sophia, and its variants, is a very common name in many parts of the world. Sophia has been a popular name throughout the Western world. It is the most popular given name for girls in the US for 2012.[1] Sophie was the fifth most popular name for girls in Australia in 2013.[2] The name is also common is Eastern Europe. In 2014, Sofia was the most popular name for baby girls in Russia[3] and Estonia.[4] The same year, in Romania, it was the 5th most common name for baby girls,[5] and in Bulgaria the 9th most popular.[6] Sofie was the 6th most popular baby girl name in Czech Republic in 2014,[7] and Zofia the 5th most common in Poland.[8]
