Songkick is an American technology company that provides concert discovery services and ticket sales for live music events. Songkick’s web and mobile app allows users to track touring artists, receive alerts for concerts in their area and purchase tickets to shows, using technology and services that power ticket sales on behalf of artists.

Songkick is headquartered in New York and has offices in London, Nashville and Los Angeles. Its service is available in 61 countries around the world.

Services

Songkick’s platform reaches 15 million visitors monthly, combining a concert discovery application with ticketing technology.[1]

Available for iOS, Android and online, Songkick’s concert discovery application allows users to track their favorite artists and set customized notifications to be alerted when they are playing shows in the user’s area, then purchase tickets directly through the app. Concert data is aggregated automatically via Songkick’s algorithm and also allows users to submit event listings, contributing to archives of more than 5 million upcoming and past shows. Users can also automatically track their favorite artists by linking their music library and Spotify account.

Songkick also provides software and services for artists to sell concert tickets directly to fans through their online channels. Artists who have used Songkick’s ticketing infrastructure include Paul McCartney, Adele, Metallica, Mumford & Sons, Pixies and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

In 2015 the company secured a patent for software that prevents known and suspected ticket scalpers and bots from accessing tickets. In 2016, Songkick found that tickets sold using this technology were 4x less likely to be listed on ticket resale sites.[2] During the pre-sales for Adele’s World Tour in 2015 and World Tour Finale in 2016, this program maintained that only 2% of the tickets sold through Songkick later appeared on resale sites[3] (versus the estimated market average of 20%).

Songkick also maintains a service for artists called Tourbox, which allows musicians and managers to control how their concerts are promoted to Songkick's users and across their distribution network.[4] It automates the process of publicizing tour dates on any of Songkick's partner sites.[5]

History

Songkick was founded in 2007 by Ian Hogarth, Michelle You and Pete Smith[6] as part of the 2007 Y Combinator program. Its initial business model, based on its concert discovery service, was based on referral fees from ticketing companies.[7] The company launched its first mobile application in 2011.

In June 2015, Songkick merged with CrowdSurge, an artist ticketing services provider.[8] CrowdSurge was founded by Matt Jones in 2008,[9] and he and Hogarth have said they decided to merge the two companies to correct “a massive inefficiency in the market.”[10] The combined company continues under the Songkick brand. Jones and Hogarth served as co-CEOs of Songkick until Jones took on the role of CEO in January 2016.[11][12]

The Warner Music group announced in July 2017 the they had acquired Songkick's app for finding concerts and the company’s trademark. The app will continue to operate as a standalone brand overseen by Warner Music’s artist and label services division.

API and Partnerships

Songkick provides a public API, which allows access to their data and integration with other services. Services that integrate with Songkick's API include Shazam,[13] Spotify,[14] SoundCloud,[15] Foursquare,[16] Deezer,[17] FanBridge,[18] Warner Music Group,[19] Yahoo! Search [20] and YouTube.[21]
