Doctor Meluzin works with his wife in France. He decides to return home while his wife stays. Meluzin wants to return to a life of practical doctor. He becomes a doctor in a small village. His neighbours are Kodets. He befriends Mrs. Kodet who tells him that couple unsuccessfully strives for a child. He advices them to attend medical center in Prague for tests of fertility. He also meets Markéta, a girlfriend of his ambulance driver. Markéta finds out that she is pregnant and tries to persuade Meluzin for the abortion but he says that it's too late for it. Kodets find out that Mr. Kodet can't have children and he leaves his wife. Markéta is then forced to leave her home because her mother reacts aggressively to her pregnancy. Markéta moves in to Mrs Kodet and they become friends. Meluzin finds out that Markéta's pregnancy is very risky and requires medical attention. He sends her to medical centre in Prague but Markéta runs back to Mrs. Kodet's flat where she feels pain. Mrs. Kodet realises that Markéta is giving birth and goes for Meluzin and his nurse.
