Sixteen Fathoms Deep is a 1934 American film starring Lon Chaney Jr and Sally O'Neil. It was an early leading role for Chaney, then billed as "Creighton Chaney".

Plot

A sponge diver, Joe Bethel, hopes to make enough money to buy his own boat and marry his fiancee, Rosie. He must deal with a villainous fellow diver, Savanis.

O'Neil made the film after missing out on the role in We're Sitting Pretty to Ginger Rogers.[2]

Reception

The New York Times called it a "good swaggering specimen" of action melodrama, "exciting, plausible and a lot of fun."[3]

It was remade in 1948 by Monogram Pictures also with Chaney Jn and co-starring Lloyd Bridges. This version was directed by Irving Allen.[4]

Plot

Lloyd Douglas turns up to a town in Florida and gets work as a diver. He works for Captain Briacos.

Production

The film was shot on location in Tarpon Springs, Florida.[5] It was to be shot in Ansco, a form of color stock.[6] It was intended to film only some footage in Florida and the rest in California but the footage would not match so it had to be shot entirely in Florida.[7]
