Simón Bolívar International Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar)[1] (IATA: SMR[3], ICAO: SKSM) known locally as Santa Marta Airport. Located about 16.5 kilometers (10.25 mi) from downtown, is an airport serving Santa Marta, the capital of the Magdalena department in Colombia. It serves domestic flights services only.
It is operated by Aeropuertos De Oriente S.A.S, transferred through a Concession Agreement signed between the Aerocivil. It is named Simón Bolívar (1783-1830) refers to the former military and political leader who played a leading role in the establishment of some South American countries as sovereign states, also the former president of Gran Colombia.
The airport is currently under renovation since February 2015.
Facilities
The airport has a new medical health care facility for primary services, also has a new Check-In area, airlines offices, a new food square, renovated restrooms, and indoor ATMs. Avianca, LATAM Colombia and Viva Colombia are the only commercial carriers that operate passenger flights in this airport. The airport was recognized as an international airport in 2007. The airport resides at an elevation of 22 feet (7 m) above mean sea level. It has one runway designated 01/19 with an asphalt surface measuring 1,700 by 30 metres (5,577 ft × 98 ft).
Renovation and expansion
The airport's renovation began in February 2015. The project investment is over 109.500 million COP (USD 46 million, apprx). This renovation comprises the construction of the new terminal building from 6,271 m2 (67,500 sq ft) to 15,413.54 m2 (165,910.0 sq ft) with an underground parking lot, The expansion of the apron area went from 19.396m2 to 30,702.56 m2, with five new glass-walled jet bridges, five baggage carousels, air-conditioning and ventilation systems.[4]
The new parking lot, to be increased from 2,070 m2 (22,300 sq ft) to 5,742 m2 (61,810 sq ft), will have a parking availability area for 33 taxis and 7 minibusses and an underground parking lot with space for 170 cars and 44 motorcycles.
The new control tower is 22.65 m (73.98 ft) high with eight floors and independent access. It operates independently since May 31, 2016.[5]
On March of 2017, the Vice President Germán Vargas Lleras will point out that $ 200 million COP will be invested by the National Government for the runway at Airport. The runway will meet the minimum length requirements for the operation of wide-body aircraft. The length would go from 1,700 by 30 metres (5,577 ft × 98 ft) to 2,200 by 40 metres (7,218 ft × 131 ft). [6]
The renovation of the airport is expected to end by February 2018.

Incidents and accidents
- On August 4, 1982, Aerotal, flight HK-2559, an Boeing 727 aircraft, landed several meters before reaching the head of the runway, bounced off the runway and lost the left main train, causing the aircraft to leave Of the track and finish in the safety zone.
- On July 17, 2007, AeroRepública flight 7330, an Embraer ERJ-190 aircraft, overshot the runway, went down an embankment, and ended up with the front end of the aircraft in the ocean.[8]
In popular culture
- In the airport will be shown on the movie American Made, starring Tom Cruise, about an American pilot recruited by the CIA for covert operations of Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar and then was a DEA informant. Will be released on September 29, 2017
