Shin Dong-wook (born Shin Hwa-shik on September 14, 1982) is a South Korean actor. He is best known for his leading roles in Soulmate and Cloud Stairs (both in 2006), and his supporting role in War of Money (2007).[1][2] Shin stayed out of the public eye for 6 years, since 2011, when he was discharged early from mandatory military service upon diagnosis of a rare condition, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a chronic disease that causes extreme bouts of pain without a known cause or cure.[3][4] In November 2016 he published his first novel, Writing, Space Journal about a man in a space elevator construction project that drifts into the galaxy, a love story between a cranky genius businessperson and a genius theoretical physicist.[5]. Soon after that, he appeared on TV for the first time in 6 years in a short video.[6]
On March 27th, 2017, his well-wishers had a pleasant surprise when they read the announcement that he was well enough to make an acting comeback, with a supporting role in the MBC drama "Lookout" a.k.a. "The Guardians", which started airing on Monday, May 22, 2017. Lookout is about a club of ordinary people whose lives were shattered because they lost their loved ones due to violent crimes and decide to take law in their hands. On May 24th he appeared as a guest in the "Radio Star" talk show (show number 528) and said that his illness is under control and nowadays it's only his hands that still hurt [7]. On June 21st, 2017 it was reported that he has been offered the leading role in the 16th season of the TV series [Miss Young-ae] [8].
