Sheldon Creed (born September 30, 1997) is an American professional off-road racing driver. Nicknamed "The Showstopper",[2] he currently competes in the Speed Energy Formula Off-Road series, driving the No. 1 Traxxas truck; he is a two-time series champion, having won in 2015 and 2016.

Creed also competes in stock car racing, running full-time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, driving the No. 40 Toyota Camry for MDM Motorsports, and part-time in the ARCA Racing Series with MDM.

Racing career

Creed's Stadium Super Truck at Crandon in 2013

Creed first started racing when he was three, riding BMX bikes and winning a state championship two years later. The next year, he started racing motocross, winning two Barona MX Park championships in 2005. Afterwards, he was invited to KTM's Jr Supercross Challenge, finishing second. At the age of eight, Creed began competing in Quarter Midget racing, eventually moving to Championship Off-Road Racing's Trophy Karts. Creed won a championship in each year of Trophy Kart competition, and also won the 2012 Superlite championship.[3]

Short course off-road racing

The 2013 season saw Creed competing in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS), finishing in the top three in points.[3] The following year, he won the Pro Lite championship.[4] Creed also joined the Stadium Super Trucks, making his debut at Qualcomm Stadium, where he recorded the fastest lap time in qualifying[5] before finishing second in the final event to Robby Gordon.[6] He eventually recorded his first SST win at Honda Indy Toronto, becoming the youngest driver to win an SST event after doing so at the age of 15.[7]

In 2014, Creed ran all 16 races of the SST schedule[8] (now known as Speed Energy Formula Off-Road),[9] finishing second in points with three wins and nine podiums.[8] He also recorded a second-place finish at X Games Austin 2014 behind Apdaly Lopez.[10]

Creed began the 2015 Formula Off-Road season in Adelaide, winning the second race.[11] In the third round, Creed finished in third while landing sideways and flipping across the finish line before landing back on his wheels.[12] Later in the year, he won the gold medal at X Games Austin 2015, taking advantage of the holeshot to win.[13] Creed battled with Gordon throughout the season, capitalizing on Gordon's misfortunes at Surfers Paradise and MGM Grand Las Vegas to win the championship.[14] He ended the season with nine wins and 13 podiums.[15]

In early 2016, Creed made his Dakar Rally debut, and at the age of 18, became the youngest driver to compete in the event.[16] However, on Stage 8, Creed suffered from clutch issues and elected to skip waypoints due to the time limit, resulting in his disqualification from the event.[17] In Formula Off-Road, he switched to No. 1 for the year and won the season opener at Adelaide.[18] He ended the year with 12 wins and 15 podium finishes in 20 races, winning the series championship with a 75-point advantage over runner-up Matthew Brabham.[19]

Sports car racing

Creed's first experience in sports car racing occurred in May 2017, when he raced in the Trans-Am Series at Road Atlanta, driving Stevens-Miller Racing's Dodge Challenger in the TA2 class as part of a four-race schedule, which included racing at Detroit, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Road America. Although he had no prior experience at Road Atlanta and was unable to test the car due to other obligations, he prepared for the race using iRacing.com, in-car video from Stevens-Miller and a virtual track system from Ross Bentley.[20]

Stock car racing

In 2014 and 2015, Creed competed in the World Series of Asphalt Pro Late Model championship at New Smyrna Speedway, finishing third in the standings during the latter.[21]

In March 2016, Creed tested an ARCA Racing Series stock car for Lira Motorsports at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville.[22] On April 6, the team announced Creed would compete full-time in the series for the 2016 season, driving the No. 38 Ford.[23] Creed finished seventh in his debut at Nashville.[24] In July, Creed made his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Eldora Speedway, driving the No. 07 for SS-Green Light Racing. After finishing fifth in his heat race,[25] he started 25th in the feature and finished 16th, two laps behind race winner Kyle Larson.[26]

In 2017, Creed joined MDM Motorsports to contest a partial NASCAR K&N Pro Series East schedule in the No. 40 Camry.[27] He made his series debut in the season opener at New Smyrna, where he started fourth and finished 19th.[28] He also run a nine-race schedule in the ARCA Racing Series with MDM. In April, he made his ARCA return at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds, where he drove a tribute scheme to Davey Allison's 1987 Winston 500 win;[29] he finished sixth in the event.[30] He later joined Mason Mitchell Motorsports for the ARCA dirt races at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, driving the No. 78 Chevrolet.[31]

In June, Creed joined Jefferson Pitts Racing's No. 27 Ford for the K&N Pro Series West race at Orange Show Speedway, in which he qualified sixth after being the fastest car in practice and finishing second to Chris Eggleston. He also competed in the K&N West race at Sonoma Raceway in June, partnering with Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick in the JPR effort.[32] While Harvick won the race, Creed finished ninth.[33] A month later, he returned to the Eldora Truck race, driving the No. 20 Chevrolet Silverado for Young's Motorsports.[34] He started 19th, but was involved in three accidents and retired from the race on lap 80 for overheating issues; he was classified in 27th.[35]

Upon announcing his Trans-Am schedule in May, Creed also stated his intention to compete in the Xfinity Series at Mid-Ohio and Road America.[20] He joined JD Motorsports' No. 01 car for the Mid-Ohio race.[36]
