Sheikh Russel (October 18, 1964 - August 15, 1975) was the youngest children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father and the first President of Bangladesh.[1][2] He was also killed in the house of Sheikh Mujib in the 1975 army coup and Assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Early life

Sheikh Russel was born on 18 October 1964, at 32nd Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, Bangladesh.[3][4] Russell is the youngest of son of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.[5] He is the brother of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.[6] He was studying in Dhaka University Laboratory School.[7]

Death

On 15 August 1975, mutinous Bangladesh Army officers attacked the residence of President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with the intention of overthrowing the government. Sheikh Russel was killed along with his family by the mutineers.[8]

Legacy

Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra is a Bangladeshi professional Football club named after him.[9][10] Sheikh Russel School Table Tennis Tournament is a tournament in Bangladesh named after him.[11] On April 2014, a childrens park named Sheikh Russel Shishutosh Angan was built in Kalabagan, Dhaka.[12] His birthday is observed by Bangladesh Awami League and organizations associated with it every year.[13] Sheikh Russel Memorial Sporting Club is an athletic club named in memory of him.[14] In 2014, the government announced plans to build 2000 computer labs in schools across Bangladesh named after Sheikh Russel.[15] The program was later expanded to built 10,000 Sheikh Russel Computer and Language Lab.[16] Sheikh Russel Jatio Shishu Kishore Parishad is a cultural organisation named after him.[17] Sheikh Russel Roller Skating Complex, named after him, was the venue for the 4th Rollball World Cup.[18] In 2015 Shaheed Sheikh Russel Bridge on the Shibbaria River was inaugurated by Sheikh Hasina.[19]
