Shawn McNeil (born March 17, 1978) is a professional ice hockey centre. He last played for the Louisiana IceGators of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL).
Playing career
McNeil was drafted by the Washington Capitals 78th overall in the 1996 NHL Entry Draftt[1] He never played in the NHL however, instead making his mark in the ECHL for the Louisiana IceGators where he began his professional career in 1999. From 1999 to 2003, McNeil played 274 regular season games, scoring 134 goals and 167 assists for 301 points. McNeil was voted into the Second All-Star Team in 2003[1] following a season which saw him score 40 goals and 91 points.
In 2003, McNeil moved to Germany's 2nd Bundesliga and signed with EV Duisburg. In 2005, they won promotion to the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. In the 2005/2006 season, McNeil helped his team to stay in the DEL as he contributed 15 goals. However, McNeil decided to join the Kassel Huskies and returned to the DEL in 2008. McNeil split the year with the Huskies and the Oberliga's Herne Crusaders.
In 2010, he returned to North America and played for the revived Louisiana IceGators of the Southern Professional Hockey League in their second season. For his first four seasons with the SPHL IceGators, he was named captain. On April 3, 2014, Shawn was named Easton Most Valuable Player of the SPHL for the 2013–14 season. He led all players in points (67) and assists (49) and tied SPHL season-highs with an 18-game point streak and an eight-game assist streak. He was also one of four IceGators to play all 56 games,and a team-best +18.[2]
In 2016, he joined the Tier III junior Louisiana Drillers of the North American 3 Hockey League as an assistant coach.
