Shanghai Queer Film Festival, (SHQFF), (Chinese: 上海酷儿影展), established in 2017, is a forthcoming annual LGBT film festival, based in Shanghai, the most populous city in China. The first festival is due to be held in September 2017. It is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit community event,[1] and states that it will offer "a week of screenings, parties, workshops and discussions".[2] The Director of the Festival is Tingting Shi.[3] A separate and unconnected LGBT film festival in the city, the ShanghaiPRIDE Film Festival, was established in 2015.

Background

Shanghai Queer Film Festival is the first film festival in the city to be run by a mostly Chinese local team. It will comprise over 20 unpaid volunteer designers, writers, curators, marketers and others.[1] It was established to provide a platform for Chinese and other Asian filmmakers, and aims to help facilitate and promote their work. It provides such methods as panel discussions and networking to enable filmmakers to spread their material more widely and to connect better to audiences.[4] The Festival programme is planned to include a schedule of discussion groups, workshops, talks and lectures from leading academics, as well as interactive activities and parties.[1]

As a not-for-profit, community-based festival, the events are free of charge and open to the general public, who are encouraged to question filmmakers and explore the issues raised in the films they attend. The Festival describes its aim to provide "a week of culture, engagement and celebration".[1][4]
