Shandong Gaosu Group or Shandong Hi-Speed Group Corporation (Chinese: 山东高速集团有限公司), (SDHS), is a state-owned enterprise in Jinan, China, engaging in the construction and management of transportation infrastructure throughout the People's Republic of China. SDHS is owned by the Shandong Provincial People's Government and plays a major role developing and managing highways, airports, and seaports throughout the province. In 2010, SDHS reported profits of almost US$590 million, making it among the most profitable province-level companies in China. In June 2011, SDHS opened the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge spanning more than 40 kilometers between Qingdao and Huangdao District in Shandong, making it the longest cross-sea bridge in the world.

Corporate history

SDHS was originally incorporated with the approval of the Shandong Provincial People's Government in July 1997 as the Shandong Province Highway Limited Corporation. Since then SDHS has gone through a series of name changes as its ownership situation and corporate mission have evolved, changing first to the Shandong Province Highway, LLC in June 1999, and then to the Shandong Province Highway Group Company in January 2005, before adopting its present name in January 2008.[1][2]

Construction projects

Since its foundation, SDHS has been involved in the construction and operation of a variety of transportation infrastructure projects throughout Shandong province, building a network that now includes almost 1400 kilometers of highway and 500 kilometers of railway. In addition to this, SDHS has taken the lead on construction of a further 3800 kilometers of railway throughout China, including a total investment of some 150 billion RMB (US$23.2 billion). Since 2005, the company has also begun investing in projects outside of its home province, such as a highway between Leshan and Yibin in Sichuan Province,[3] and a highway between Xuchang and Yuzhou in Henan province.[4] Most recently, SDHS opened the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in June 2011 near Qingdao, Shandong, after four years of construction and at a cost of more US$1.5 billion. Upon its completion, this bridge is reported to be the world's longest roadway bridge over water.[5]

An international construction subsidiary of the company is the China Shandong Economic & Technical Cooperation Group, which works on international contracting projects in Chad, Serbia, and other countries.

Corporate recognition

In 2010, SDHS reported total profits of 3.8 billion RMB (US$587 million) stating that this made it the most profitable province-level company in China.[6] The company also reported that in 2010 it was selected for the fourth year in a row as one of the "500 strongest companies in China," and recognition from the provincial government of Shandong as "an advanced collective leadership of state-owned enterprises."
