The eighth season of Shameless, an American comedy-drama television series based on the award-winning British series of the same name by Sean Penn, was announced on December 25, 2016, a day after the end of the seventh season.[1] The season will consist of a total of 12 episodes.[2] It is slated to premiere on November 5, 2017.[3]

Development and production

Shameless was renewed for an eighth season on December 19, 2016. Principal photography for the season was set to begin in May 2017,[2][4][13] however it started on June 9.[14]

In December 2016, days before the renewal announcement, it was reported that Emmy Rossum had requested that she be paid more than William H. Macy for future seasons, to make up for previous seasons in which she was paid less than Macy. The pay dispute briefly delayed work on the eighth season while she and Warner Bros. Television negotiated.[15] The dispute came to an end on December 14, when Rossum confirmed through Twitter that she would continue to work on the series.[4]

On May 24, 2017, Lyn Paolo, the costume designer for the show tweeted Cameron Monaghan that she would be seeing him soon, confirming his return to the series.[7] On May 25, 2017, Emma Kenney and Shanola Hampton confirmed that they had received the scripts for the first episode, confirming their return.[6] On June 5, 2017, the table read for the first episode occurred, with Jeremy Allen White, Steve Howey, and Isidora Goreshter also confirmed to be returning.[5] On June 22, 2017, it was announced that former Gossip Girl star Jessica Szohr would be joining the cast. Szohr will play Nessa, a strong, tough and smart lesbian who is a tenant in Fiona's newly purchased apartment building. The duo will develop a strong friendship. [16]
