Shahid Masood Khan (Urdu: شاہد مسعود خان‎), is a Pakistani journalist, physician, and a political analyst who guests a talk show Live with Dr. Shahid Masood on News One.

Previously he served as Group executive director of GEO News and President of ARY Digital Network. In 2008, he was briefly appointed as the managing director and chairman of Pakistan Television Corporation and also served as the special assistant to then Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousaf Raza Gillani with the status of a minister of state in the Gillani ministry.

Early life and education

In an interview to Arab News, Khan says that his father was a civil engineer in Saudi Arabia and he worked there for 15 years while, his mother is a teacher. According to him, he spent his childhood in Taif and Riyadh. For seven years, he went to the Pakistan International School in Riyadh. Two of his younger brothers were born in Saudi Arabia so the country is close to him.[1]

Khan received fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons, U.K.[2] He is a medical doctor by profession.[1]

Khan did his major in International Relations and Defence Studies from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.[2]

Career

Khan served as senior Executive Director of ARY Digital Network, and since 2001 he was hosting TV show Views on News.[2] He was also the chief of the ARY One World (now known as ARY News).[3]

In 2005, Khan received scholarship from CNN and carried out coverage of three wars including Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon.[2]

In 2007, Khan joined Geo TV[3] as its Group Executive Director where he hosted the TV show Meray Mutabaq.[2]

In June 2008, Khan was appointed as the Chairman of Pakistan Television Corporation with the additional charge of Managing Director at PTV[2][4] on a two-year contract.[5] However, in November 2008 he resigned from the post chairman and managing director.[6]

Following the resignation, he was appointed as special assistant to then Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousaf Raza Gillani with the status of a minister.[6][7]

In 2014, he joined News One and started show Live with Dr. Shahid Masood, as a guest journalist.[8] The show then shifted to ARY News in February 2016,[9] and then on BOL from late 2016 till February 2017.[10][11] The show then re-shifted to News One on 14 February 2017.[12]

Khan also had presented religious documentaries End of Time: The Lost Chapters from News One in 2015,[13] End of Time: Final Call from ARY News in 2016[14] and End of Time: The Moment from News One in 2017.[15]

Controversies

In 2010, The Express Tribune reported that a Karachi resident filed a petition against Khan and asked the court to take action against Khan for encouraging cultural hatred through his TV show.[16]

In 2013, Dawn reported that an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan ordered Khan to telecast an apology for telecasting derogatory remarks on the judiciary after which Khan submitted written apologies before the court.[17]

In March 2016, The Express Tribune reported that Finance Minister of Pakistan Ishaq Dar sent a legal notice to Khan for allegedly levelling baseless allegations in his TV programme and demanded that Masood offer an apology and pay ₨ 1 billion fine.[18]

In August 2016, Dawn reported that PEMRA imposed a 45-day ban on Khan show aired on the ARY News after Masood alleged in a programme that the chief justice of Sindh High Court took a bribe and later did not fulfil his promises. He was also banned from participating in any other TV show during this ban period.[19][20]

In 2017, Ishaq Dar again sent a legal notice to BOL TV, demanding an apology for false and defamatory statements, aired in Khan's show on 24 January 2017.[21] PEMRA, on 13 February, decided to ban his show for 30 days, and ₨ 1 million fine was charged on him,[22] but Islamabad High Court uphold the ban the next day and his show remains on-air from News One.[23]
