Hasnain Baqai (Urdu: شاہ سید حسنین بقائی‎), also known as Shah Saheb, is an Islamic scholar and reformer.^[1][2] He is a patron and parts of various social, academic and other developmental activities of Sufi Sunni Muslims in India. He is the President of the All India Ulema and Mashaikh Board (AIUMB) a Sufi movement in India.^[3][4][5] One source describes him as having an inclusive and broadminded interpretation of Islam.^[6]

Family Background

He comes from a family of sufis known as "Khandaan-e-Baqaiyah". He traces his lineage from Sufi Syed Baqaullah Shah founder of Silsila Baqaiyah (also known as DADA MIYAN). His ancestors came from Iran. He is the son of Maqdoom e Millat Shah Syed Waliullah Baqai.^[7][8]

The "Waqf Movement" or Tehreek-e-Awqaf which is going on in Lucknow under the leadership of Kalbe Jawad and shah saheb has achieved a nominal success till date.^[15][16]

In an interview condemning the execution of Nimr al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia, he said "One Shia and sunni cleric was hanged just because they was raising voice for minorities’ rights and sheltering of terrorism by Saudi Arabia."^[17][18]

Involvement in Triple Talaq Issue in India

The only person in India who stand against triple talaq in one sitting, He said in an interview : in the shariat , uttering 'talaq' thrice at one go does not amount to divorce, and some maulanas are kicking up controversy to keep their domination in the community. Triple talaq is un-islamic in one sitting . The provisions in Quran clarify the way of divorce. He supported the central government's moves to muslim women through 'triple talaq' in Supreme Court.^{[19] [20] [21] [22] [19] [23] [24] [25] [26]}
