Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival

Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival is an annual event for all ages held at the William S. Hart Park in Old town Newhall, California. The festival has been considered one of the most icon events of its kind as each year over 10,000 visitors attend lectures and performances on multiple stages by poets, authors, instructors, musical acts, and dancers in the fields of Western, Bluegrass, Americana and Spoken Word to folk, Native American and Mexican American traditions to name a few.[1] Guests participate in cowboy and cowgirl living history from life around a chuck wagon, roping, bull riding, crafts, games, and trying an assortment of dishes including bbq and its famous peach cobbler. Other highlights include a demonstration of plains tipi living, touring the historic Heritage Junction town and train engine, appearances by lasso expert Dave Thornbury and gunslinger Joey Rocketshoes Dillon, Buffalo Soldiers camp, and Western and Civil War reenactment.[2][3][4][1]

History

The Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival began in 1994 after efforts by City leaders looked to embrace Santa Clarita’s Western history.[5] The event was first held at Melody Ranch but due to complications with filming contracts had to be relocated in 2015 to the William S. Hart Park.[6] In 2018, the festival will be celebrating its 25th anniversary.
