Salt Bae
Nusret Gökçe [nusˈɾet ɟøcˈt͡ʃe], also known as Salt Bae, (born in 1983) is a Turkish chef of Kurdish[1][2] origin who owns Nusr-Et, a chain of Turkish steak houses. His art of cooking and preparing meat became an internet sensation.[3][4][5]
Life and career
Gökçe became more widely known via the internet during January 2017 for the way he "suavely" cuts his meat.[3] When asked about his favourite meat he jokingly said he was a vegetarian.
In 2010 Gökçe opened his first restaurant in Istanbul. Two years later, in 2012, he started the Dubai restaurant. After its renowned success in Dubai, Gökçe moved to Abu Dhabi a year later.
Salt Bae meme
His fame came from one viral video named: "Ottoman Steak", which was posted on 7 January 2017 at 10:44am UTC[6], with his restaurant Twitter account Nusret. It was viewed 10 million times on Instagram after which he was dubbed "Salt Bae" because of his iconic way of sprinkling salt: letting salt to fall down on his forearm then spread on the meat.[3] He was later interviewed by NBC News, where he said "The shape of the meat and the taste of it starting from the top down is a part of me... All of my feelings are coming from inside of the meat down to when I put the salt onto the meat."[7]
