Salamat is one of the 23 regions of Chad. The region's capital is Am Timan. Salamat's economy is based on subsistence agriculture, fishery and cotton. Salamat has been described as the "poorest region in the world" by the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and other sources.[2][3]
Demography
The region's population was 302,301 inhabitants in 2009.[1]
The main ethnolinguistic groups are the Arabs (Salamats, Hemats, Rachids, Kolomats), the Kibets and the Roungas.

The region of Salamat is divided into three departments:
