The SRM University (Sri Ramaswami Memorial University), formerly SRM Institute of Science and Technology, is a deemed university in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded in 1985 as SRM Engineering College in Kattankulathur, under University of Madras. It has 7 campuses, 4 in Tamil Nadu—Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Tiruchchirappalli and others in Delhi NCR, Sonepat and Gangtok. The institute gained deemed status during the 2003-2004 academic year and was renamed SRM Institute of Science and Technology. It became SRM University in 2006, when it attained the status of a full-fledged university, under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956.[1][2]
The university is approved by the University Grants Commission and is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[3] It has been given an overall A Grade by NAAC.[4] Some programs in SRM University are accredited by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.[5]
Campus
Kattankulathur Campus (Main Campus)
Located about 35 km[6] away from the city of Chennai, this campus is situated on a 250-acre[7] site overlooking Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST Road), NH-45. The main campus at Kattankulathur consists of a College of Engineering and Technology, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Science and Humanities and a School of Management.
Kattankulathur Campus also houses the SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Center and the SRM Hotel. The SRM hospital can accommodate 1200 in-patients with 25 specializations in PG education in medical science..
The campus also accommodates the SRM Institute of Hotel Management, SRM Arts and Science College, Valliammai Engineering college (SRM Group) and Valliammai Polytechnic college.
In 2014 the university announced a plan to open a law school at the campus.[8]
Students of SRM University, Kattankulathur launched a nanosatellite named SRMSAT, the satellite is an Indian technology demonstration and Earth observation satellite which was built and is operated by students of SRM University. It weighs 10.9 kg and is intended to monitor greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere. It will also be used to develop future satellites to be operated by the university.[9]

Ramapuram Campus
The Ramapuram Campus of SRM University and is located at Ramapuram, Chennai. It houses three colleges, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, SRM Dental College, and Easwari Engineering College. It also provides Bachelor of Architecture, MBA and Master of Technology courses. It occupies 30 acres of land and also has an SRM Hospital on site.
Vadapalani Campus (City Campus)
Vadapalani Campus is located in the center of Chennai city. This campus houses the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of MCA, and the Sivaji Ganesan Film Institute. The SRM Institutes For Medical Science is also located within the campus.[12]
Modinagar Campus, Ghaziabad, Delhi NCR Region
The 25-acre campus at Modinagar on Delhi-Meerut highway houses the faculties of Engineering & Technology, Management and Teacher Education.[12]
Irungalur Campus, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu
SRM established a Medical college known as Chennai Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (CMCH&RC) on the outskirts of Trichy in 2008. The Hospital is equipped with 750 beds. It is in Irungalaur, Manachanallur Taluk on the Trichy-Chennai highway 28 km from Tiruchirappalli. Anna University affiliated T. R. P Engineering College is in the same campus started in 2010.
Sonepat Campus, Haryana
The 47.68 acres (19.30 ha) campus at Sonepat, Haryana is located in the Rajiv Gandhi Education City.[13] It houses the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, and Faculty of Management, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Library & Information science, Faculty of Finance & Commerce and Faculty of Humanities.
Gangtok Campus, Sikkim
SRM University opened a 100-acre campus in Gangtok, the state capital of Sikkim during the 2014 academic year. Initially, distance education in courses such as business administration, science, hospitality and tourism would be offered, before starting full-fledged engineering programmes.[8]
Admission Scandal
The founder chairman of SRM Group of educational institutions T. R. Pachamuthu was arrested in Chennai on 26 August 2016 in connection with an alleged scandal in medical admissions involving crores of rupees. He was arrested in connection with more than 100 complaints from parents related to "transactions" involving payment of money running into several million rupees for getting admissions to medical courses in SRM institutions.[14]

SRM university was ranked 46 in India by Careers360's in 2017, 5th among private universities.[15] Careers360 has given it the second best rating, "AAAA+", among engineering colleges in India.[19] It also ranked 8th among engineering colleges in India by India Today in 2017[17] 27 by Outlook India in 2017,[18] and 35 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2017.[16]
