São Domingos is a town in the central part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. Its 2010 population was 2,818 making it the seventh most populated place on the island. It is situated 13 km southeast of Assomada and 13 km northwest of the capital Praia and located on the Praia-Assomada Road (EN1-ST01) and is also bypassed since around 2008, it connects the route with the north of the island. It is the seat of the São Domingos Municipality.

About the village

The village was founded in the early 16th century as the area became inhabited, one of its first inhabitants were predominantly slaves who arrived before 1513. The village was burned to the ground by Drake and his men[2] during the Capture of Santiago in 1585, its inhabitants fled at the time. The settlement in the early colonial times even appeared in other maps inside the map collection and atlases such as the 1683 French map and the 1747 French/Dutch map by Jacques Nicolas Bellin,[3] also that time, the place was more prominent than Assomada or Tarrafal.

In 2006, the Variant Professional Formation School (Escola de Formação Profisional Variante), a law school opened.[4] In 2010, a school named after Fulgéncio Lopes Tavares was opened, it is named after the singer (nickname: Ana Nobo).

The town also has its own health center which serves the municipality, first opened in November 2005 and is located in the small subdivision of Neta Gomes.[5]

Minibus services (yasi or hilux) are offered in São Domingos and connects with the city of Praia, its rate is 100 escudos per ride, it also connects with Assomada and Tarrafal. In 2015 a project called EcobusCV started running a fleet of dual fuel waste vegetable oil / diesel modified Toyota HiACE minibuses using a scheduled service model between Praia and Assomada. Buses depart every 30 minutes, from designated bus stops in Praia, at Igreja Nova Apostólica in Fazenda, and the city, in front of the court house, several stops in town are included.

Sports

Sporting clubs, mainly football (soccer) includes Os Garridos, the oldest and well known in the area and Andorinha. Up to 2003, they were in the Santiago Island League, after the breakup, they participated in the North Zone up to 2010, they are currently a part of the South Zone.

Its average temperature is 26 ° С, its temperature in April is 28 ° C and 23 ° С in January. Its average precipitation is 209 mm, 120 mm is fallen in September and only a millimeter is fallen in April

The fifth song of the album by Tito Paris Guilhermina (2002) is titled "Na Caminho di Sandomingos" and is about riding on the road in and around the village.
