Rynek is also the name used in Polish to refer to a market place or market square. It derives from the German word Ring (English: ring) and describes the arrangement of market squares in newly erected towns in medieval times. Most Polish towns and cities have at least one Rynek, which is the result of their establishment in the Middle Ages. Cities like Krakow, Warsaw and Wroclaw have very famous and well-visited Rynek. Some other Slavic languages use very similar words to describe a market square, such as the Russian рынок (rynok).
