Ryan Alexander Hawley (born 21 September 1985, Dubai) is an English actor. He debuted in Life is Wild in 2007, a television series. He also starred in Titanic, a mini series released in the honour of the 100th anniversary of the original incident, playing Jack Thayer.
In 2014, he got his most prominent role, playing Robert Sugden in ITV's Emmerdale, becoming the fourth actor to take on the role in the series. He received critical acclaim for his role and was nominated for "Best Villain" at the British Soap Awards. [1]
Ryan is known for keeping his life private and is not on Twitter.
Personal life
Hawley spent his childhood partly in Sheffield and partly in the UAE due to his parents' work.[2] In school, Hawley took A-Level Media Studies and took part in school plays, subsequently realising his dream of becoming a film director was very difficult.[2]
Hawley went to university and trained to become an actor at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, England.[3]
Career
Hawley's acting career began in 2007, when he began to appear in a number of TV series', film's and stage productions. Beginning in 2013, Hawley was out of acting work for an 18-month stretch and had a variety of jobs including working as a chef at Wagamama in Heathrow Airport, stacking shelves in a clothes shop and fitting fireplaces as a labourer.[4]
Emmerdale
In 2014 he started his most prominent role, becoming the fourth actor to portray Robert Sugden on the ITV soap opera Emmerdale. His main story-lines have included: returning to the village with the White family, an affair with Aaron Livesy (Danny Miller), the manslaughter of Katie Sugden (Sammy Winward) and cover-up, being shot by Ross Barton (Michael Parr) in a "who dunnit?" story-line, supporting Aaron when discover Aaron was sexually abused by his father Gordon Livesy (Gary Mavers), as a child, rekindling his relationship with Aaron and later becoming engaged to Aaron following a car crash in No Return week.
