Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (Japanese: 龍が如く6 命の詩。, "Like a Dragon 6: Poetry of Life")[1] is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Sega for PlayStation 4. The game is the seventh main entry in the Yakuza series of action-adventure games,[2][3][4][5] and was released in Japan on December 8, 2016 and is set to be released worldwide in early 2018.[6]

Gameplay

Yakuza 6 is an action-adventure game set in an open world environment and will be similar to that of other Yakuza titles with exploration mixed with arcade style over the top combat. Kazuma Kiryu returns as the main and only playable character and the game features locations of Kamurocho and Hiroshima.

Plot

Recovering from his injuries from the previous game the police approach Kazuma Kiryu in hospital and reveal they are going to arrest him for his past crimes. Kiryu chooses not to resist the arrest and willingly spends three years in prison in order to live peacefully with the children he had fostered at Asagao and Haruka in the future. Upon being released, it is revealed that Haruka had not stayed at Asagao and had seemingly gone missing. Kiryu searches for Haruka only to find out that she has been left in a coma after a hit and run incident. It is also revealed that Haruka has a newborn son, Haruto, who Kiryu decides to kidnap so that child-services do not take him away. With it unclear whether Haruka will recover from her injuries Kiryu travels with the baby to Hiroshima, to uncover the mystery of what Haruka had been doing for the last three years.

Development

Yakuza 6 was announced on 15 September 2015 at the Tokyo Game Show during the Sony conference, exclusively for the PlayStation 4 and with a release date of "Autumn 2016".[5] Toshihiro Nagoshi of Sega confirmed that more details would be revealed during the rest of the event.[5] A traditional Chinese localisation has been announced for the Asia region.[7] Beat Takeshi has been announced as a character within the game.[8] The game will also feature New Japan Pro Wrestling wrestlers Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Kazuchika Okada, Satoshi Kojima, Tetsuya Naito and Toru Yano.[9]

Yakuza 6 will include Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, Puyo Puyo, Out Run, Super Hang-On, Space Harrier, and Fantasy Zone as playable games in the form of basic play spots. Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown and Puyo Puyo will include two-player modes as well.[10]

Reception

The game received a score of 39/40 from the video game magazine Famitsu.[11]

Sales

In its first week of release in Japan, it sold 218,168 copies.[12] As of December 23, it has sold 262,760 copies in the region.[13] Combined with the rest of Asia, the game shipped over 500,000 units.[14]
