Gangaa(also known as Sagar Ki Ganga) is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language soap opera that airs daily Monday to Friday at 8:00 pm in the UK and at 8:30pm on &TV. It premiered on March 2, 2015.[1] The show went off air on 2nd June 2017 completing 595 episodes.[2] It was produced by Sphere Origins.
In 2015, the show won the award for Best Programme with a Social Message at the Indian Telly Awards, as well as a Best Child Actress award for Ruhana Khanna as young Ganga. In November 2016, Ruhana bags an award again for Desh Ki Ladli- Most Promising Child Star as Krishna at the Indian Telly Awards
On August 29 2016, on Janmashtami, Ruhana Khanna, who played child Ganga, made her comeback as Ganga and Sagar's daughter Krishna, 8 months after being replaced by Aditi Sharma as grown up Ganga.
Plot
The show centres around a young girl named Ganga, who becomes a widow on the same day as her marriage when her husband and her father, with whom she was very close, are killed in a riot on the bank of river Ganges in Varanasi. The show follows her struggle for her right to live happily, opposing all the restrictions placed upon widows by society as she is blamed for the death of her husband whom she never met or knew. Despite being at an age where Gangaa didn't know the meaning of marriage.
The story develops on Ganga and Sagar's childhood friendship where he always stands by her side. Sagar and Ganga are separated as Sagar moves to London and for the next 10 years Ganga has only been waiting for him. Her love for him is implacable as she hides and adores vermillion believing she is fulfilling her duty as Sagar's wife. It is believed that Sagar is Gangaa's last destination ( The river Ganga only flows to Sagar Island) until eternity. Ganga has always loved Sagar truly and worshipped him, she believes that if there is no Sagar then there is no Ganga.
As their love story goes on they face many hardships being together due to the restrictions put on her as a widow. As on the day of Holi he throws all the colours all over her as she deserved that right, and makes her wear a coloured sari changing her widowed life forever.
As 7 years pass, Ganga is seen bringing up her and Sagar's daughter Krishna alone. Sagar who is aware that Krishna is his daughter and trying to win Ganga's love and trust back to live happily again.
