Rudy Pantoja Jr.

Rudy McCoy-Pantoja Jr. (born July 20, 1964)[1], also known as just Rudy Pantoja and by the gag name "Hugh Mungus", is a political candidate and a resident of Seattle, Washington. He gained internet notoriety for a video of him telling Black Lives Matter activist Zarna Joshi that his name was "Hugh Mungus" at a Seattle City Council meeting in 2016.[2][3]

He ran for Washington House of Representatives in 1994, 1996, and 2002. He ran for Seattle City Council in 2017.[4]

Community Activities

Pantoja chose not to take part in the Great American Boycott on May 1, 2006. He instead was seen sweeping a sidewalk in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle.[5]

Following the 2012 Packers–Seahawks officiating controversy, Rudy attempted to exchange gifts with Green Bay, Wisconsin mayor Jim Schmitt. After Jim's office refused the gifts, Rudy exchanged gifts with Delavan, Wisconsin mayor Mel Nieuwenhuis. Rudy sent local beer, smoked salmon and kringles to Mel. In return Mel planned to send a "six or 12-pack of Miller High Life, cheese and fresh venison he hunted himself."[6]

Personal Life

Pantoja is of Mexican, German and Native American descent and considers himself to be Chicano.[7] A GoFundMe campaign started by Ethan Klein of h3h3Productions in November of 2016 raised $150,000 for Rudy after he faced several health problems, a hip replacement, his truck broke down, and he was served an eviction notice.[8][9]
