On July 28, 2011, President Barack Obama nominated Contreras to fill a vacancy on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.[3] He would replace Judge Ricardo M. On March 22, 2012, the Senate confirmed Contreras in a voice vote. He received his commission on March 23, 2012.[4]

In April 2016 Chief Justice John Roberts appointed Contreras to the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for a term starting May 19, 2016.[5][4]

Notable case

On November 17, 2016, Judge Contreras threw out a lawsuit against Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell seeking to compel a vote on the Supreme Court nomination of Merrick Garland.[6]
