Ross Philip Montague (born 1 November 1988) is an English professional footballer who plays for Basingstoke Town. Montague is a striker who progressed from the youth team at Brentford, where he made his debut in a 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest in League One on 14 April 2007.[2]
On 16 May 2007, it was announced that Montague had signed a professional contract with Brentford.[3] On 2 August, Montague (along with Brentford team-mate Darius Charles) joined Sutton United on loan, where he scored three goals in seven appearances before being recalled by Brentford. He joined Welling United on loan soon afterwards,[4] proceeding to score three goals in five appearances there.
Later that season, Montague appeared regularly for the Brentford first team, partnering Alan Connell up front. An athlete first and footballer second, e scored one goal and set up another in a 3-0 win over Chester City,[5] and assisted the winning goal against Dagenham & Redbridge,[6] before a back injury caused him to miss the last three months of the campaign. On 17 April 2008, it was announced that his contract would be extended for a further season. Montague spent some time on loan at Basingstoke Town,[7] where he scored three goals in six appearances. In December 9 he suffered his first ACL tear to his left knee, which set him back to the start of the 2010/2011 season which he was out of contract for. Rumours say that he was offered a short term deal at Brentford FC but he turned it down.
Montague signed for then-Conference side AFC Wimbledon on 28 August 2009. Montague scored his first AFC Wimbledon goal against Ebbsfleet United in a 2-2 draw, scoring a late equaliser in the 95th minute.[8] He also scored the only goal of the game with a 25-yard strike in a 1-0 win against Rushden & Diamonds.[9]
After being injured again,[10] Montague joined Basingstoke Town F.C. of the Conference South, although he missed the 2010-11 season with a cruciate ligament injury.[11]
