The Italian Catholic Diocese of Pitigliano-Sovana-Orbetello (Latin: Dioecesis Pitilianensis-Soanensis-Urbetelliensis) is a Latin suffragan see in the ecclesiastical province]] of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Siena-Colle di Val d'Elsa-Montalcino, in Tuscany.^[1]^[2]

Its cathedral episcopal see is the Duomo/Cattedrale di Ss. Pietro e Paolo, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, in Pitigliano, a part of Grosseto, which municipality in Toscana also has

the Co-Cathedral: Concattedrale di S. Maria Assunta (S. Biagio), dedicated to the Assumption and St. Biagio, in Orbetello
the former Cathedral: Antica Cattedrale di S. Pietro Apostolo Antica, dedicated to the Apostle Peter, in Sovana.

Statistics

As per 2014, it pastorally served 70,000 Catholics (97.1% of 72,100 total) on 2,177 km² in 71 parishes with 65 priests (54 diocesan, 11 religious), 9 deacons, 68 lay religious (13 brothers, 55 sisters) and 5 seminarians.

History

The two towns, Sovana and Pitigliano, are situated in the Province of Grosseto, Central Italy. The bishopric was established in 670 as Diocese of Sovana, a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Siena, without formal precursor. Sovana was an ancient Etruscan city, and preserved a certain importance till the end of the thirteenth century, having been from the days of Charlemagne the capital of the counts of Aldobrandeschi, lords of Southern Tuscany.

In 1230 the diocese lost territory to Territorial Abbacy of Santi Vincenzo ed Anastasio alle tre Fontane. In 1240 the city withstood a siege by Emperor Frederick II. Later it passed under the sway of the Orsini family, who transferred their residence to Pitigliano, mentioned for the first time in 1081. In 1401 it fell into the power of the Republic of Siena. In 1434 Count Gentile Orsini having been killed at Sovana, the people of Pitigliano put the town to fire and sword, and brought about its destruction.
The territory of this diocese includes the Vallombrosan Abbey of Monte Calvello, which was transferred in 1496 to within the city limits.
On 1844.01.11 it was renamed as Diocese of Sovana–Pitigliano / Soanen(sis)–Pitilianen(sis) (Latin) as the former collegiate church of Saints Peter and Paul in Pitigliano became the new cathedral, its name accordingly being added to the diocesan title, albeit (yet) in second place.
On 1981.03.25 it was again renamed as Diocese of Sovana–Pitigliano–Orbetello (Italian) / Soanen(sis)–Pitilianen(sis)–Urbetellien(sis) (Latin), having gained territory from the suppressed Territorial Abbacy of Santi Vincenzo ed Anastasio alle tre Fontane
On 1986.09.30 it was finally renamed as Diocese of Pitigliano–Sovana–Orbetello / Pitilianen(sis)–Soanen(sis)–Urbetellien(sis) (Latin), putting its actual see first.
