Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a 2016 American science fiction novel by Alexander Freed based on the 2016 film of the same name.
Plot
The story takes place months before the events of A New Hope (originally published in written form as Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker in 1976). The Galactic Empire led by Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader, is completing the final stages of it's grand project to build the ultimate weapon in the galaxy: The Death Star, a moon-sized space station capable of destroying an entire planet at maximum power.
Five main characters recruited by the Rebel Alliance, embark on a top-secret mission to steal the design plans for the Death Star in hopes of finding an area of the space station which would be penetrable and in order to completely destroy it.
Differences from the film
- In the beginning, like the film, when Galen boards the shuttle with Director Krennic, he feels a sense of remorse for what he did.[1][2]
- Jyn Erso's history is slightly expanded upon in the book.[1][2]
- More background details are revealed on Jyn's cellmate during her time in imperial captivity.[1][2]
- The book also expands on the rivalry between Orson Krennic and Grand Moff Tarkin.[1][2]
- More of the Death Star attack on Jedha city is revealed, including imperial casualties.[1][2]
- More is written from the perspective of General Raddus, including a brief history of his species.[1][2]
- The finale also gives more from the perspectives of each main character. The finale also offers a slight difference from the film. Instead of a male rebel, a middle aged rebel woman with a burned face hands over the data of the Death Star to Captain Antillies, who in turn hands them over to Princess Leia, leading directly to the events of A New Hope.[1][2]
Reception
The novel held a 4.19/5 rating on meta-critic site Goodreads, as of July, 2017.[3]
