Robinson David Chirinos González (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈroβinson tʃiˈɾinos]; born June 5, 1984) is a Venezuelan professional baseball catcher for the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2011 with the Tampa Bay Rays. He missed all of the 2012 baseball season with a concussion and he was traded to the Rangers in April 2013.
Career
Following the 2010 season, Chirinos was added to the Cubs 40-man roster.[1]
2011
After the 2010 season, Chirinos was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays with Sam Fuld, Hak-Ju Lee, Brandon Guyer, and Chris Archer for Matt Garza, Fernando Perez, and Zac Rosscup.[2][3]
Chirinos was promoted to the majors for the first time on July 18, 2011, by the Rays.[4] He doubled in his first major-league at bat against A. J. Burnett of the New York Yankees.
2012
Chirinos hit his first MLB home run on August 3, 2011 against the Toronto Blue Jays. He also recorded his first RBI earlier in this game. Chirinos had an opportunity to make the big league club in 2012 out of spring training, but he suffered a concussion which prevented him from playing any baseball during the 2012 season.
2013
Chirinos was traded to the Texas Rangers on April 8, 2013. He had a very limited role behind A. J. Pierzynski as the backup, as he only played in 13 games with a .179 batting average in 28 at-bats.[5]
2014
Chirinos got his chance to start for the Rangers in 2014, playing in a career-high 93 games. He had many more career-highs in 2014 as well, with 13 home runs, 40 RBI and a .239 batting average.
2015
Chirinos started for the Rangers yet again in 2015. He played well early in the season before straining his shoulder on the first day of August. He came back for the ALDS against the Toronto and hit .273 and one home run in 3 games played in a series loss.
