Robert Gay (MP)

Robert Gay FRS (c1676–1738), of Hatton Garden, Middlesex and Walcot, Bath, was an English surgeon and politician.

He entered Jesus College, Cambridge in 1693. He purchased Walcot Manor on the outskirts of Bath from his wife's father in 1699.[1]

He was appointed Assistant Surgeon annually at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London from 1708 to 1719 and was raised to surgeon there from 1719 to 1729. He also acted as Treasurer at Christ's Hospital School. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1718.[2]

He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of Great Britain for Bath 22 February 1720 to 1722 and 1727 to 1734.[3]

He leased to John Wood the Elder the land for Queen Square, Bath and for Gay Street, Bath, which was thereby named after him.[3]

He died in 1718. He had married twice, firstly Mary Saunders and secondly Margaret, the daughter of Sir Edward Farmer of Great Parndon, Essex. He left a son and 2 daughters. The Walcot estate passed to his daughter Margaret by his second wife.[1]
