Richard Barron is an American women's basketball coach. Since 2011, he had been the head coach of the Maine Black Bears women's basketball team. although in 2017, he took a leave of absence, due to medical issues.[1] In April 2016, Barron signed a four-year contract extension ($150,000 per year) with the University of Maine.[2]
Barron was the 2015 America East Coach of the Year.[2] During his time at Maine, the Black Bears began playing home games at the significantly larger off-campus Cross Insurance Center in nearby Bangor.[2]
Prior to coaching at Maine, Barron also was the head coach at Princeton University (2001-2007) and Sewanee: The University of the South.[2]
In January 2017, Barron took a leave of absence from Maine due to illness. Six months later, he had successful craniotomy at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.[3]
