Rhynchotus is a genus of birds in the tinamou family. This genus comprises two members of this South American family.

Taxonomy

Tinamous have evolved from ratites and are the only extant ratites that fly, and are the closest to the ancestral flying ratites.^[1]

Species

The species are:

• The red-winged tinamou, Rhynchotus rufescens, located in northern and central Argentina, Brazil, except the western portion, Paraguay, Colombia, and southeastern Peru,^[2] and possibly in Uruguay^[1]
  • R. rufescens rufescens, located in southeastern Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, southeastern Brazil, and northeastern Argentina.^[2]
  • R. rufescens catingae, located in central and northeastern Brazil^[2]
  • R. rufescens pallascens, located in northeastern Argentina^[2]
• The huayco tinamou, Rhynchotus maculicollis, located in the Andes of northwestern Argentina and Bolivia.^[2]
