Yonggary (Hangul: 용가리; RR: Yonggari) is a 1999 South Korean science fiction monster film directed by Shim Hyung-rae. The film is a remake of the 1967 film of the same name. It was released in the United States as Reptilian.[2][3][4]
Plot
An archaeological party explore some caverns underground. Dr. Campbell and Dr. Hughes are the two leaders of the archaeological expedition, and get separated. While Dr. Hughes finds an alien corpse with a fossilized diamond, Dr. Campbell finds hieroglyphics at the cost of the party except for Hughes and himself. Two years later in 2001, Campbell and his assistant Holly are digging up the bones of Yonggary, a gargantuan Ceratosaurus 50 times the size of a Tyrannosaurus rex. Out of nowhere, people slowly are being killed around the site. While Campbell is working, Dr. Hughes, who has been legally dead for 2 years, goes to Campbell and tells him to stop the dig. Bud Black, the cameraman hired by Campbell, comes into the tent and sends Dr. Hughes off. Holly quits the expedition when another "accident" occurs. In the town bar, Dr. Hughes finds Holly and takes her back to her hotel room to tell her why he thinks the bones of the dinosaur, which he calls Yonggary, are going to bring the end of the world. After explaining, Holly and Hughes go to the site to stop Campbell and Bud but it is too late and aliens resurrect Yonggary. After Yonggary's first appearance, the Army comes in and takes Campbell, Holly and Hughes to an army base when Yonggary is dispatched by the aliens again. The army sends choppers after Yonggary, but he destroys them. Yonggary is then sent to Seoul and does some damage, where jets attack him. After the fight, Bud steals the tape with the information. Campbell, Holly and Hughes catch up to him and the foursome find out Yonggary was sent by the aliens. Yonggary is transported to a power plant, where jet pack soldiers attack him. He is later sent back to Seoul, where the remainder of the soldiers destroy the diamond on his head. A squadron of jets attack him. He saves people below by holding up a collapsing building. Enraged, the aliens send down their own monster, Cyker. Yonggary and Cyker battle, with Yonggary winning. The following morning, Yonggary goes to sleep and is sent to Monster Island where Yonggary can adjust to normal life and become a hero.
Aliens attack Newton,New Jersey in 200,000,000 B.C. and kill off the dinosaurs. In 1999, Dr. Campbell, an American paleontologist is called over to a dig in Newton. A mysterious old man catches wind of this and sneaks aboard. He introduces himself to Campbell as Mr. Hughes, an "insurance agent". The two men discover a prophecy that Yonggary, a giant Ceratosaurus will awaken and return earth to the way it was in the Stone Age, when dinosaurs ruled the earth. The Army takes Campbell into a base. Yonggary awakens and makes his way to Seoul. The city is evacuated and the Army lure him out. Campbell and Yonggary have a playful moment. The Army only do more damage. Campbell and his ex-girlfriend, Holly, discover Yonggary is of Irish-Italian decent, a burrower and pregnant. Campbell tells the Army this and is kicked off the team. Campbell is kidnapped by Hughes; he tells him he wants to find the nest too. Holly and her cameraman, Bud Black, follow. Yonggary reappears and choppers attack him. He escapes into the Han River and is killed by two nuclear submarines. Campbell finds the nest and the babies attack him. Jets blow up the nest in the Sejong Cultural Center. Yonggary gives chase to the Hangang Bridge. Jets fly in to kill him. Hughes cheers him on, but it is no good. Yonggary is killed. Seoul is reopened and in the smoking ruins of the Sejong Culture Center, a lone egg hatches.
Production
Directed by Shim Hyung-rae, Yonggary is a remake of the original Yonggary film from the 1960s.[3]
Release
Yonggary was released in South Korea on July 17, 1999.[1] It was later re-released with updated special effects and a different story as 2001 Yonggary on January 20, 2001 which had a longer running time of 95 minutes.[4][5] 2001 Yonggary was re-titled Reptilian on its American release.[3][4]
