Rajit Kapur (Hindi: रजित कपूर, Punjabi: ਰਜੀਤ ਕਪੂਰ) is an Indian film and theatre actor as well as director. He is known for his award-winning portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in the 1996 film, The Making of the Mahatma, of the protagonist Unni in the Malayalam film Agnisakshi, and of the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi[1] in the eponymous television series directed by Basu Chatterjee and broadcast on Doordarshan. His debut film was Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1992) directed by Shyam Benegal.
Career
Rajit Kapoor played the role of famous Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi in early 90's. Byomkesh Bakshi was a fictitious character created by popular Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandopadhyaya. Basu Chatterji directed his TV show based on these detective stories of Byomkesh, where Rajit Kapoor played the lead role. K. K. Raina played the role of Byomkesh Bakshi's assistant Ajit Bandopadhyaya and Sukanya Kulkarni played the role of Satyavati, Byomkesh's wife. The show was very popular and Rajit Kapoor achieved his first media recognition through this show.
