Rajesh Gopinathan (born 1971) is the CEO and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).[1] Rajesh took over as the CEO of TCS on February 21, 2017, prior to which he was CFO and Vice President of TCS.[2] Born in 1971, Rajesh is one of the youngest CEOs of the Tata Group.[3]

Education and career

He completed his 11th and 12th in St. Francis' College, Lucknow. He then went on to complete his electrical and electronic engineering degree from the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli (now National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli), in Tamil Nadu, India in 1994. He obtained a post-graduate diploma in Management from Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. Joining Tata Consultancy Services in 2001, Rajesh took over as CEO on February 21, 2017 prior to which he was CFO of TCS.

Personal life

Rajesh Gopinathan was born in Thrissur in Kerala. He lived in Lucknow till his 12th standard. His dad used to work for the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) wing of the Indian Railways. He resides in Mumbai with his wife Lekshmi, daughter and son. Rajesh likes to go for long walks, he loves reading and watching movies.[4]

Biography

Rajesh joined the Tata Strategic Management Group in 1996. In 1999, Tata Industries formed a new company, which was later called Tata Internet Services, which he joined as its first employee. He joined Tata Consultancy Services in 2001 from the Tata Industries, and worked to drive TCS’ newly established e-business unit in the United States. He was also involved in the design, structure and implementation of the new organizational structure and operating model of the company. He has also worked on multiple assignments with Tata companies as part of the Tata Strategic Management Group since 1996.

He has played a key role in helping TCS become a $17.6 billion global company. With over 387,000 consultants, TCS has become the largest private sector employers in India with the highest retention rate in a globally competitive industry.

Prior to his role as Chief Financial Officer, Rajesh was the Vice President - Business Finance. In this role he was responsible for the financial management of the company’s individual operating units. His responsibilities include financial planning and control as well as revenue assurance and margin management. Under his guidance TCS remains the most valuable company in India with a market capitalization of over USD 70 billion during 2015-16.

Rajesh has contributed towards major initiatives of the Company. Under his management TCS was rated as the world's most powerful brand in IT Services by Brand finance,[5][6] the world’s leading brand valuation firm.[4]

Awards and recognition

In 2014 Rajesh was awarded the "Young Alumni Achiever's Award" under "Corporate Leader"[4] category from IIM, Ahmedabad.
