Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 are the first two seasons of the Digimon anime series. Digimon Adventure originally aired from March 7, 1999 – March 26, 2000 whilst Digimon Adventure 02 originally aired from April 2, 2000 – March 25, 2001 as a direct sequel to the preceding series. Both series feature a variety of different characters but mostly centre upon The DigiDestined, a group of children and their partner Digimon who have been chosen to protect the Digital World from various forces of evil. A sequel 6-part movie series titled Digimon Adventure tri. started airing in November 2015.
DigiDestined
The DigiDestined (選ばれし子供達 Erabarashi Kodomotachi, Chosen Children) are a group of children and their partner Digimon who have been chosen to protect the Digital World from various forces of evil. Each child is given a device known as a "Digivice" which serves many purposes but is mostly used to allow their Digimon partners to Digivolve into stronger forms. Prior to the events of Digimon Adventure, having lost their memories of that event, the eight members of the first DigiDestined group witnessed the battle between a Greymon and Parrotmon at their childhood town of Highton View Terrace prior to moving to Odaiba. They were also witnessed by a group of figures who created the DigiDestined Digimon as part of a project to control the balance between good and evil in the Digital World, each Digimon linked to a Digivice and Crest which are connected to the strongest trait of their respective child. However, when the facility came under attack, Gennai managed to get only seven of the Digi-Eggs to File Island while the eighth Digi-Egg, which eventually became Gatomon, as left behind on the Server continent along with the seven of the Crest stones.[1]
Four years later, whilst attending summer camp on August in 1999, Tai, Sora, Joe, T.K., Matt, Izzy, and Mimi are transported to File Island after receiving their Digivices and then meeting their Digimon partners.[2] While they searched for a way home, the DigiDestined eventually learn of their significance in saving the Digital World as they are led to Server to obtain the Crests to enable their Digimon to assume their ultimate level forms. But when the DigiDestined encounter Myotismon, learning time in the Digital World is faster than the human world, it caused a series of events that briefly allow the seven children to return to Tokyo where they are joined by their eighth member, Tai's sister Kari, and Gatomon once she remembers who she is. The event allow enable Tai and Matt is enable their partners to assume Mega form, making them effective against the Dark Masters and then Apocalymon after they practically destroyed the previous Digital World. Though Apocalymon's defeat allowed the Digital World to return to its original state, causing its time to run in sync with real world time, the DigiDestined end up returning to their world. However a series of events, such as an attack on cyberspace by Diaboromon that had WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon combine into Omnimon, allowed the DigiDestined to reunite with their partners again.[3]
In the year 2002, with the older members now preoccupied in middle school affairs, T.K and Kari join up with a new group of DigiDestined during the events of Digimon Adventure 02. The two senior DigiDestined having their Digivices upgraded into D3s, which their new teammates use, they and those among their old team who are available at the time act to stop the actions of Ken Ichijouji from enslaving Digimon though his Black Rings and digivolution-negating Control Spires. The new DigiDestined overcome this disadvantage by using Digi-Eggs, each based on one of the eight Crests, that allow their partner Digimon to "armor Digivolve". Though Ken eventually joins their group, it turns out he was influenced by Yukio Oikawa as he sends his creations she and Mummymon to take over what is later to be revealed to be disrupting the Digital World's natural order. As the DigiDestined use new form of Digivolution known as "DNA Digivolution" to merge their Champion-level Digimon into stronger ultimate forms, followed by Paildramon (ExVeemon and Stingmon's ultimate form through DNA Digivolution) gaining the ability to become the mode-changing Imperialdramon through a power boost from one of Azulongmon's digicores,[4][5] the group eventually learn that Yukio's actions are actually manipulated by an incorporeal Myotismon who eventually regains physical form before being defeated for good.
In the year 2005, with T.K. and Kari now middle schoolers as their older brothers and their friends now attend high school, the original eight DigiDestined reunite in the Digimon Adventure tri. film series after their four newer members have mysteriously disappeared after being defeated by the mysterious Alphamon. While investigating a mysterious infection that turns Digimon rogue, Tai and the others welcome another DigiDestined, Meiko Mochizuki, and her partner Meicoomon. However, they discover that Meicoomon is the source of the infection and to save both the Digital and Human worlds from ruin, the Digital World is rebooted. In the occasion, almost all Digimon including Agumon and the others lose all their previous memories leaving their human friends devastated. Despite that, Tai and co. travel to the rebooted Digital World where they reunite with their partners and discover a ploy by Yggdrasil, one of the gods of the Digital World, who intends to use Meicoomon, who still retain her memories, as a tool to separate humans and Digimon forever. To this end, Yggdrasil corrupts Gennai, who betrays the DigiDestined and cooperates with its plan. During the course of the series, not only Agumon and Gabumon regain the power to reach the Mega level and fuse into Omnimon, but all the other Digimon partners attain the power to Digivolve to the Mega level as well.
Taichi "Tai" Yagami "Kamiya"
Voiced by: Toshiko Fujita (TV), Natsuki Hanae (tri.) (Japanese); Joshua Seth, Jason Spisak (Movie 4) (English)
Taichi "Tai" Kamiya, known as Taichi Yagami (八神 太一 Yagami Taichi) in Japan, is the main protagonist of Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure tri., and the leader of the original DigiDestined. His aggressive and impulsive personality often put him in danger, and he eventually learnt that empathy and compassion are the keys to success rather than reckless courage,[6] but he remains willing to put his life on the line for all his friends at any time, particularly his sister Kari. Aside from his role as leader of the DigiDestined, Tai is also the star player on his school's soccer team[7] and at the time the kids enter the Digital World, he is best friends with Sora Takenouchi, another member of the DigiDestined.[8]
Prior to the events of the series, Tai and his younger sister Kari receive a Digi-Egg which eventually Digivolves into a Greymon in order to protect them from a Parrotmon, which attacks Hikarigaoka or Highton View Terrace in the dub.[9] These events in turn would lead to them being chosen to become members of the DigiDestined. Four years later whilst attending summer camp, Tai and his friends, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, Joe and T.K. are transported to the Digital World after receiving their Digivices.[2] Once there, Tai meets and befriends his partner Digimon, Agumon and takes it upon himself to lead his friends on their journey for civilization. However, the group soon become separated as Devimon divides File Island into separate fragments. During this time, Tai befriends Frigimon who takes him and Agumon to another part of the island where they meet Matt and Gabumon once again.[10] Afterwards, Tai, Matt, Agumon and Gabumon travel to the Primary Village where they are reunited with the rest of their group whilst protecting T.K. from Leomon who had been under the control of a Black Gear. Soon afterwards, Tai and the others learn about their role as the DigiDestined and subsequently defeat Devimon after T.K.'s partner digimon, Patamon Digivolves to Angemon.[11]
After Devimon's defeat, The DigiDestined are contacted by a man named Gennai who instructs them on the next phase of their adventure.[12] After leaving File Island, Tai leads his allies to the Server Continent where he obtains the "Crest of Courage", during the group's initial confrontation with Etemon.[13] After becoming the first member of the DigiDestined to find their crest, Tai becomes arrogant and attempts to force Agumon to Digivolve into his ultimate form before he is ready, causing Agumon to Dark Digivolve into Skull Greymon.[14] Tai is left disheartened by this experience but Piximon restores his confidence by reminding him of how he learned to ride a bike. This allows Tai to face his own fear, activating his Crest and allowing Greymon to Digivolve into Metal Greymon and defeat Etemon.[15] However, Etemon's defeat causes a dimensional rift to open, which transports Tai and Metal Greymon back into the real world. Tai returns home to find that only minutes have passed in the real world since the children vanished from camp, and that his little sister Kari recognizes Koromon as a Digimon. When both Tai and Kari begin to see Digimon crossing over to the real world, with most of the general public oblivious to their presence, Tai realizes he must return to prevent a disaster for both worlds. Despite receiving a transmission from Izzy pleading him not to return, Tai and Agumon take the first portal they can find, and reappear at the site of Etemon's defeat.[16] The pair set off to find the other children, and learn their attempts to find Tai have left them scattered, and the schemes of Demidevimon have caused some to turn against each other.
After reuniting with his allies and reassembling their group, Tai and the others learn of Myotismon's scheme to enter the real world to find and kill the eighth DigiDestined child. Tai and his allies pursue Myotismon and his forces and eventually discover that the eighth DigiDestined child is in fact Tai's younger sister Kari and that her partner Digimon is Gatomon.[17] Although Myotismon is initially defeated by Angewomon,[18] he returns soon afterwards as VenomMyotismon. During this time, Gennai informs the DigiDestined of a prohecy which leads to Agumon and Gabumon Warp Digivolving into their mega forms, War Greymon and MetalGarurumon after Tai and Matt are shot with arrows of Light and Hope from Angewomon and Angemon respectively.[19] Together with help from the remaining DigiDestined, they are able to defeat VenomMyotismon[20] but are forced to return to the Digital World straight afterwards to do battle against The Dark Masters[21] and later Apocalymon. After Apocalymon's defeat, Tai and his allies are forced to leave the Digital World as it begins its restoration.[22]
In the sequel, Digimon Adventure 02, Tai becomes more patient and mature and relinquishes his role as leader of the DigiDestined to Davis Motomiya and signifies this change by giving him his trademark goggles.[23] In the epilogue, Tai becomes a diplomat for both Earth and the Digital World at the United Nations.
During the events of Digimon Hurricane Landing!/Supreme Evolution! The Golden Digimentals, edited out of Digimon: The Movie, Tai is among those captured by Wendigomon during his search for Willis and is de-aged until Davis and Willis defeat him.[24] Tai is also featured in supplementary audio dramas released on CD during the television series' run, most of which consist miscellaneous adventures with the other DigiDestined that do not relate to the overall plot of the show. These include a mystery adventure Tai and Sora go on[25] and tap dancing to distract Boltmon on Valentine's Day.[26] In an audio drama released years after the end of Digimon Adventure 02, which takes place between Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, Tai is heard talking to Agumon after a Digiport briefly opens.[27] In addition to his appearances in Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, Tai also makes a brief appearance in the third and final season of Digimon Fusion.
Tai's character was designed by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. In an exclusive interview released with the Digimon Adventure DVD box on December 21, 2007, producer Satoru Nishizono revealed that as the staff decided on Tai's name using kanji that related to "luck."[28]
In a series of online polls conducted on Toei Animation's Digimon website, Tai was ranked 3rd by Japanese voters as their favorite DigiDestined.[29] When the same question was asked three more times, his rank fell to 6th,[30] rose to 4th,[31] and finally landed at 5th.[32]
Agumon
Voiced by: Chika Sakamoto (Japanese); Michael Lindsay/Tom Fahn (Agumon), MJ Lallo/Philece Sampler/Brianne Siddall (Koromon), Michael Lindsay/Kyle Hebert (Greymon), Joseph Pilato/Kyle Hebert (Metal Greymon), Lex Lang/Kyle Hebert (WarGreymon) (English)
Agumon (アグモン) is Tai's Digimon partner, a reptile Digimon who is brave, relaxed, and funny while fighting by Tai's side. His signature attack is Pepper Breath (Baby Flame in Japanese version). Originally Koromon when he and Tai met, Agumon assumed his current form to protect him from a Kuwagamon.[2] While he is more mellow than Tai in this form, Agumon will generally follow Tai's lead when it comes to impulsive actions.
After their encounter with Kuwagamon, the DigiDestined and their Digimon are attacked by a Shellmon. As Agumon is the only one who has eaten, he is the only one with the strength to fight Shellmon but he is unable to defeat him in his current state. Tai tries to help Agumon by distracting Shellmon but he is caught. As Shellmon prepares to attack the others, Agumon Digivolves into his champion form, Greymon and manages to defeat Shellmon.[33] However, the group soon become separated as Devimon divides File Island into separate fragments. During this time, Agumon remains with Tai until they are reunited with the rest of their group. In their confrontation with Devimon, Agumon and his Digimon allies all Digivolve into their champion forms to fight him but they are all no match for him. However, T.K.'s Digimon partner Patamon finally Digivolves into his champion form, Angemon and manages to defeat Devimon.[11]
After Devimon's defeat, The DigiDestined are told by Gennai to travel to the Server Continent. After obtaining his "Crest of Courage" during the group's initial confrontation with Etemon,[13] Tai becomes arrogant and tries to force Agumon to Digivolve to the ultimate level, first by overfeeding him then by putting himself directly in harm's way. This causes Agumon to Dark Digivolve into SkullGreymon.[14] Although Tai is initially left disheartened by this experience, he is able to regain his confidence with Piximon's help, allowing him to overcome his fears and thus activate his "Crest of Courage", allowing Greymon to Digivolve into his Ultimate form, MetalGreymon and defeat Etemon.[34] However, Etemon's defeat causes a dimensional rift to open, which transports Metal Greymon and Tai back into the real world. Soon afterwards however, they return to the Digital World[16] to find their friends who by now, have split up to find Tai.
After reuniting with their allies, they return to the real world to stop Myotismon from finding and killing the eighth DigiDestined child. After attempting to rescue the citizens who have been trapped by Myotismon,[35] MetalGreymon and Tai reunite with their allies to confront the evil Digimon himself. After Gatomon Digivolves into Angewomon, Metal Greymon and the other DigiDestined Digimon lend their powers to her, allowing her to defeat Myotismon with her "Celestial Arrow" attack.[18] However, Myotismon returns soon afterwards as VenomMyotismon. During this time, Gennai informs the DigiDestined of a prophecy which leads to Agumon and Gabumon Warp Digivolving into their Mega forms, WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon after Tai and Matt are shot with arrows of Hope and Light from Angemon and Angewomon respectively.[19] Together with help from the remaining DigiDestined, they are able to defeat VenomMyotismon[20] but are forced to return to the Digital World straight afterwards to do battle against The Dark Masters.
Upon their return to the Digital World, they are confronted by the Dark Masters: MetalSeadramon, Puppetmon, Machinedramon and Piedmon. WarGreymon and his allies are easily defeated and only escape because of Piximon's sacrifice.[36] A short while later, Izzy discovers that WarGreymon is equipped with "Dramon Destroyers", which are particularly effective against Digimon with "Dramon" in their name. WarGreymon is initially overpowered by MetalSeadramon and almost defeated[37] but Whamon intervenes, sacrificing his life in the process and allowing War Greymon to defeat MetalSeadramon.[38] However, a heated argument between Tai and Matt erupts soon afterwards, causing the DigiDestined to disband temporarily.[1] Whilst separated, Tai's younger sister Kari becomes ill, prompting him to go in search of a cure and causing him to unknowingly walk into Machinedramon's domain.[39] Although Koromon is initially too weak to fight, he is empowered by Kari's "Crest of Light", allowing him to Digivolve to War Greymon and defeat Machinedramon.[40] Shortly afterwards, the DigiDestined reunite to confront Piedmon, the last of the Dark Masters but WarGreymon and most of his allies are turned into key chains. They are eventually saved by MagnaAngemon and defeat Piedmon with the help of their allies.[41]
After Piedmon's defeat however, Gennai warns the DigiDestined about an ancient evil which has now resurfaced. Apocalymon appears and overwhelms the DigiDestined by using the attacks of the evil Digimon they have defeated against them before destroying their tags and crests and deleting them. Agumon and Tai encourage their allies not give up, leading them all to discover that the power of their crests has been present within each and everyone one of them this entire time. With their powers restored, Agumon and his Digimon allies all Digivolve to their strongest forms and confront Apocalymon once again.[42] With help from the other DigiDestined, War Greymon and MetalGarurumon successfully destroy Apocalymon's body but he makes one last attempt to destroy both the real world and the Digital World with his "Total Annihilation" attack but he fails as the force of the attack is contained by the DigiDestined's Digivices. After Apocalymon's defeat, Agumon and the other DigiDestined are forced to part ways with their partners as the gate between the real world and Digital World closes, which would prevent Tai and his friends from getting back home.[43]

- MetalGreymon (メタルグレイモン Metarugureimon): Agumon's Ultimate form, a Cyborg type Digimon whose strength is said to be comparable to that of a nuclear warhead. Agumon first assumed this form when Tai invoked his "Crest of Courage" during the DigiDestined's final battle with Etemon. His signature attack is Giga Blaster (Giga Destroyer in the Japanese version), two highly destructive missiles that are fired from his chestplate.
- SkullGreymon (スカルグレイモン Sukarugureimon): Agumon's alternate Ultimate form, an Undead type Digimon that resulted from Dark Digivolution. - MetalGreymon (Virus) (メタルグレイモン (ウィルス種) Metarugureimon (Wirusu Shu)): Agumon's alternate Ultimate form. He appeared in Digimon Adventure 02 while Agumon was under the control of the Digimon Emperor. Yamato "Matt" Ishida
Voiced by: Yūto Kazama (TV), Yoshimasa Hosoya (tri.) (Japanese); Michael Reisz (English)[46] , Vic Mignogna (tri.)
Yamato "Matt" Ishida, known as Yamato Ishida (石田 ヤマト Ishida Yamato) in Japan, is a member of the original DigiDestined, the second in command to Tai, the leader. Matt lives with his father alone in Odaiba due to a divorce between his parents.[8] This leads to an awkward relationship between his mother and himself, as he feels that they treat each other more as strangers instead of family, as well as pressures him to prioritize T.K.'s safety.[47] In the English version, there was a dub error where Matt indicates that they are half-brothers when in fact they were full brothers.[48]
Matt is regarded as "cool" by his peers and is seen as a "born rebel" who "prefers to do things his own way."[49] However, he can be passionate and emotional as well and behind his façade, lies an "introspective, sensitive side" that comes mostly through his younger brother T.K, whom he is fiercely protective of.[50] He takes caution in the Digital World and often clashes with Tai Kamiya because of the leader's recklessness.[8] Matt owns a harmonica and plays it frequently, usually when he is resting.
When Matt becomes separated from the rest of his group after Devimon divides File Island into separate fragments, Matt remains with Gabumon during this time until they meet Tai and Agumon again.[10] They eventually reunite with the rest of their group at The Primary Village after protecting T.K. from Leomon who had been under the control of a Black Gear at the time. Soon afterwards, Matt and the others learn about their role as the DigiDestined and subsequently defeat Devimon after T.K.'s partner Digimon, Patamon Digivolves to Angemon.[11]
After Devimon's defeat, The DigiDestined are contacted by a man named Gennai who instructs them on the next phase of their adventure.[12] When a Kuwagamon attacks the DigiDestined, Piximon appears and saves them. Whilst training with him, Matt finds his "Crest of Friendship".[51] When Tai and Agumon are transported back to the real world after Etemon's defeat, Matt and the other DigiDestined split up to find him. Matt stays with his younger brother T.K. and Patamon and they eventually come across an abandoned theme park. Matt decides to ride a swan shaped boat around the nearby lake and promises T.K. that he will be back in a few hours[52] but he and Gabumon become lost and eventually wind up at a restaurant where they find Joe working off his debt. Matt elects to stay with Joe and help him work off his debt but becomes increasingly frustrated with him when he continually causes accidents which force them to continue working. Some time later, Tai arrives at the restaurant along with Agumon, T.K. and Patamon and suggests that they all leave together but Matt refuses to go anywhere with Joe, accusing him of doing everything wrong on purpose. Digitamamon and DemiDevimon then attack the group and T.K. is captured by Vegiemon but Joe intervenes and saves him, only to be captured himself. Matt is touched by Joe's willingness to help T.K, despite his treatment of him, activating his "Crest of Friendship" and allowing Garurumon to Digivolve into Weregarurumon who then defeats Digitamamon and scares away Vegiemon. After the battle, the boys decide to split up into groups (with Matt staying with T.K.) to follow separate readings on their Digivices in the hopes that it will lead them to their friends.[53]
After reuniting with his allies and reassembling their group, Matt and the others learn of Myotismon's scheme to enter the real world to find and kill the eighth DigiDestined child. They all pursue Myotismon and his forces and eventually discover that the eighth DigiDestined child is in fact Tai's younger sister Kari and that her partner Digimon is Gatomon.[17] Although Myotismon is initially defeated by Angewomon,[18] he returns soon afterwards as VenomMyotismon. During this time, Gennai informs the DigiDestined of a prohecy which leads to Gabumon and Agumon warp digivolving into their mega forms, Metal Garurumon and WarGreymon after Matt and Tai are shot with arrows of Hope and Light from Angemon and Angewomon respectively.[19] Together with help from the remaining DigiDestined, they are able to defeat VenomMyotismon[20] but are forced to return to the Digital World straight afterwards to do battle against The Dark Masters.[21] It is during this time that Cherrymon (a Digimon working for Puppetmon) tricks Matt into thinking that he doesn't have any friends and that Tai is his rival.[54] This leads to a heated argument between the two and a confrontation between their Digimon which culminates in Matt's departure from the group and the temporary disbandment of the DigiDestined.[1] However, Matt and Metal Garurumon would briefly reunite with the others to aid them in defeating Puppetmon.[55] After Puppetmon's defeat, Matt falls into a state of depression but with Gabumon's continued companionship, he is able to overcome this. They reunite with Joe and Gomamon soon afterwards and help Sora to overcome her doubts as well.[56] They along with their allies, eventually defeat Piedmon,[57] the last of the Dark Masters and later, Apocalymon as well. After Apocalymon's defeat, Matt and his friends are forced to leave the Digital World as it begins its restoration.[22]
In the sequel, Digimon Adventure 02, Matt becomes more mature and easy-going. He forms a band with three other classmates called the Teen-age Wolves (stylized TEEN-AGE WOLVES) and serves as their lead vocalist and bassist.[58] He makes fewer appearances as he relinquishushes most of his responsibilities to Davis Motomiya, the leader of the new generation of DigiDestined but provides assistance and guidance when needed.[23] In the Digimon Adventure Tri movie series, Matt is revealed to have made a new band called Knife of the Day after the Teen-age Wolves disbanded. As depicted in the Digimon Adventure 02 series epilogue, Matt becomes an astronaut where he became the first person on Mars when he was supposed to go to the Moon.
Matt's character was designed for the pilot movie storyboard by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. In an exclusive interview released with the Digimon Adventure DVD box on December 21, 2007, producer Satoru Nishizono revealed that as the staff had agreed on deciding Tai's name, he had tried to name the other characters similarly with kanji that related to "luck."[28] Jeff Nimoy, co-screenwriter of the English version of Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, noted that if there were anything he could change about Matt, it would be making him "less indecisive", citing his complication of adapting the script of the scene where Matt confronts his feelings in a cave with Gabumon.[59]
Matt is one of the most popular characters in the Digimon Adventure series. In a series of online polls conducted on Toei Animation's Digimon website, Matt was ranked 1st by Japanese voters as their favorite DigiDestined.[29] When the same question was asked three more times, his rank remained at 1st[30][31] but fell to 2nd,[32] losing to Kari. In addition to this, Matt is ranked 1st as the DigiDestined voters would want to switch places with,[60] whom the voters would want as a brother,[61] as the best-looking DigiDestined in the winter,[62] and whom the voters would want as their boyfriend.[63] He placed 2nd as the DigiDestined who voters related the most to,[64] as the best-looking DigiDestined in the summer,[65] and as the best-looking DigiDestined in the autumn,[66] and as the DigiDestined who voters thought was the strongest.[67] In addition to this, Matt's harmonica ranked 1st for the individual item of the DigiDestined that the voters would want.[68]
Gabumon
Voiced by: Mayumi Yamaguchi (Japanese); Kirk Thornton (English)
Gabumon (ガブモン) is a reptile Digimon wearing a wolf-pelt who is very loyal to Matt, giving him free rein to find himself but trying to reason with him whenever Matt falls too far. His signature attack is Blue Blaster (Petit Fire in Japanese version). Originally Tsunomon when he and Matt met, Gabumon assumed his current form to protect him from a Kuwagamon.[2] Gabumon's utter devotion to help Matt on his journey of self-discovery led to him going against the rest of the DigiDestined. He later saves Matt from going down the spiral of self-destruction.
Whilst camping one night in the Digital World, the DigiDestined are attacked by a Seadramon so Matt and Gabumon jump into the water to distract him but he grabs Matt instead, prompting Gabumon to Digivolve into his champion form, Garurumon to protect him. Shortly afterwards, the group become separated as Devimon divides File Island into separate fragments. During this time, Gabumon remains with Matt until they are reunited with the rest of their group. In their confrontation with Devimon, Gabumon and his Digimon allies all Digivolve into their Champion forms to fight him but they are all no match for him. However, T.K.'s digimon partner Patamon finally Digivolves into his Champion form, Angemon and manages to defeat Devimon.[11]
After Devimon's defeat, The DigiDestined are told by Gennai to travel to the Server Continent. A short while later, Matt finds his "Crest of Friendship" whilst he and the other DigiDestined are being trained by Piximon.[69] After Etemon's defeat, Gabumon and the other DigiDestined split up to look for Tai and Agumon who have been transported back to the real world.[16] Gabumon remains with Matt during this time and they eventually come across a restaurant where Joe is working for Digitamamon to work off his debt. Soon afterwards, they are attacked by Digitamamon along with DemiDevimon and Vegiemon but Matt manages to invoke the power of his crest, allowing Garurumon to Digivolve into his ultimate form, Weregarurumon and defeat Digitamamon.[53] After reuniting with their allies, they all return to the real world to stop Myotismon from finding and killing the eighth DigiDestined child.
After Gatomon Digivolves into Angewomon, WereGarurumon and the other DigiDestined digimon lend their powers to her, allowing her to defeat Myotismon with her "Celestial Arrow" attack.[18] However, Myotismon returns soon afterwards as VenomMyotismon. During this time, Gennai informs the DigiDestined of a prophecy which leads to Gabumon and Agumon warp digivolving into their mega forms, Metal Garurumon and WarGreymon after Matt and Tai are shot with arrows of Hope and Light from Angemon and Angewomon respectively.[19] Together with help from the remaining DigiDestined, they are able to defeat VenomMyotismon[20] but are forced to return to the Digital World straight afterwards to battle against The Dark Masters.
Upon their return to the Digital World, they are confronted by the Dark Masters: MetalSeadramon, Puppetmon, Machinedramon and Piedmon. Metal Garurumon and his allies are easily defeated and only escape because of Piximon's sacrifice.[36] A hearted argument between Matt and Tai erupts soon afterwards, causing the DigiDestined to disband temporarily.[1] However, Matt and Metal Garurumon would briefly reunite with the others to aid them in defeating Puppetmon.[55] After Puppetmon's defeat, Matt falls into a state of depression but with Gabumon's continued companionship, he is able to overcome this. Sora Takenouchi
Voiced by: Yūko Mizutani (TV), Suzuko Mimori (tri.) (Japanese); Colleen O'Shaughnessey (English)[8]
Sora Takenouchi (武之内 空 Takenouchi Sora) is a member of the original DigiDestined. Despite being somewhat of a tomboy, she takes caution in the Digital World because of Tai's recklessness and serves as the[70] mother figure of the DigiDestined.[8] In addition to her role as a member of the DigiDestined, Sora is best friends with Tai Kamiya and a member of his soccer team along with Izzy.[47]
When Sora is separated from the rest of her group after Devimon divides File Island into separate fragments, she remains with Biyomon during this time until they reunite with the rest of their group at The Primary Village after protecting T.K. from Leomon who had been under the control of a Black Gear at the time. Soon afterwards, Sora and the others learn about their role as the DigiDestined and subsequently defeat Devimon after T.K.'s partner digimon, Patamon Digivolves to Angemon.[11]
After Devimon's defeat, The DigiDestined are contacted by a man named Gennai who instructs them on the next phase of their adventure.[12] After leaving File Island, Sora and her allies travel to the Server Continent where Izzy receives a message from a Digimon in danger, claiming to know where the last crest can be found. Motivated by this, the DigiDestined set off to free the imprisoned Digimon, Datamon but as they are trying to free him, Etemon attacks them. As the others fend Etemon off, Datamon escapes, taking Sora and Biyomon along with him.[71] Datamon makes a copy of Sora so that he can use her Digivice and Crest to make Biyomon Digivolve and thus exact revenge on Etemon for imprisoning him. However, his plan fails as Tai manages to rescue her and returns her Digivice and crest to her, allowing Biyomon to Digivolve and help them escape the pyramid before it collapses.[34] After Etemon's defeat, Tai and Agumon are transported back to the real world, prompting Sora and the other DigiDestined to split up and find him. During this time, Sora remained hidden and helped her allies secretly by thwarting DemiDevimon's plans. She stopped Tai and T.K. from eating mushrooms which would have erased their memories,[72] she ruined DemiDevimon's plot to have Matt and Joe work at Digitamamon's restaurant for longer[53] and she consoles Mimi after the latter wakes from a nightmare.[73] Sora eventually reunites with her allies and reveals that she has been avoiding them to have some time to herself as she has been concerned that her "Crest of Love" will never glow. As they settle for the night, DemiDevimon tries to attack Sora but Biyomon protects her and is injured as a result. Myotismon attacks the group shortly afterwards and easily overpowers the other Digimon. Biyomon Digivolves into Birdramon, despite Sora's protests but she is also no match for Myotismon. Sora then professes her love for Biyomon, allowing her to Digivolve into her ultimate form, Garudamon who then whisks everyone to safety.[74] Soon afterwards, The DigiDestined return to the real world after discovering Myotismon's plan to find and kill the eighth DigiDestined child.
Whilst pursuing Myotismon and his forces, Sora, Mimi and Palmon are captured by a horde of Bakemon led by Phantomon and held captive. They are attacked by a DarkTyrannomon but Palmon manages to Digivolve into her ultimate form, Lilymon and stops him.[35] At this point, Myotismon intervenes and defeats Lilymon but Birdramon appears and rescues her and Sora.[75] They eventually reunite with their allies and aid Angewomon in defeating Myotismon[18] before defeating him a second time after he returns as VenomMyotismon.[20] After VenomMyotismon's defeat, Sora and the other DigiDestined are forced to return to the Digital World to do battle against The Dark Masters.[21] As they prepare to face Piedmon, the last of the Dark Masters, Sora begins to doubt herself, causing her and Biyomon to become trapped in a dark cave, similar to the one that Matt had become trapped in when he was depressed. However, with Matt and Joe's help, Sora is able to overcome these doubts and free herself and Biyomon from the dark cave.[56] Afterwards, they reunite with their allies and defeat Piedmon[57] and later, Apocalymon as well. After Apocalymon's defeat, Sora and her friends are forced to leave the Digital World as it begins its restoration.[22]
In the sequel, Digimon Adventure 02, Sora has a more feminine appearance and has switched from soccer to tennis. She also makes fewer appearance and has passed her responsibilities to Yolei Inoue but provides assistance and guidance when needed. During the events of Digimon Hurricane Landing!/Supreme Evolution! The Golden Digimentals, edited out of Digimon: The Movie, Sora is among those captured by Wendigomon during his search for Willis and is de-aged until Davis and Willis defeat him.[23] Due to Digimon Hurricane Landing!/Supreme Evolution! The Golden Digimentals being heavily cut when the movie was localized for Digimon: The Movie, this subplot was removed in the English version.[24] Sora is also featured in supplementary audio dramas released on CD during the television series' run, most of which consist of miscellaneous adventures with the other DigiDestined that do not relate to the overall plot of the show. These include Sora having her own radio show.[25] In an audio drama released years after the end of Digimon Adventure 02, which takes place between Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, Sora is heard getting closer to her mother and learning how to play tennis.[76]
Sora's character was designed for the pilot movie storyboard by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. In an exclusive interview released with the Digimon Adventure DVD box on December 21, 2007, producer Satoru Nishizono revealed that as the staff had agreed on deciding Tai's name, he had tried to name the other characters similarly with kanji that related to "luck."[28] In a series of online polls conducted on Toei Animation's Digimon website, Sora was ranked 5th by Japanese voters as Favorite DigiDestined.[29] When the same question was asked two more times, her rank remained at 5th[31] but fell to 8th.[32] In addition to this, Sora is ranked 1st as whom the voters would want as an older sister[61] and as the best-looking DigiDestined in the summer.[65]

Koushiro "Izzy" Izumi
Voiced by: Umi Tenjin (TV), Mutsumi Tamura (tri.) (Japanese); Mona Marshall (English)
Koushiro "Izzy" Izumi, known as Kōshirō Izumi (泉 光子郎 Izumi Kōshirō) in Japan is a member of the original DigiDestined. He is a computer expert and lives with his adoptive parents, with his adoptive father being the last surviving relative of his real father. When he initially found out that he was adopted, he began to subconsciously distance himself from his parents, focusing more on his computer instead. This issue was resolved once his parents came forward with the truth and he accepted them as his true parents.[78]
When the DigiDestined are attacked by Andromon (then under the control of a Black Gear), he finds that data in the Digital World is actually alive. Izzy also discovers a program on his computer which leads to Tentomon digivolving into his champion form, Kabuterimon. Kabuterimon then frees Andromon from the black gear's control by destroying it with his "electro shocker" attack.[79] Soon afterwards however, Izzy and Tentomon become separated from their group as Devimon divides File Island into separate fragments. Izzy remains with Tentomon during this time until they reunite with the rest of their group at The Primary Village after protecting T.K. from Leomon who had been under the control of a Black Gear at the time. Soon afterwards, Izzy and the others learn about their role as the DigiDestined and subsequently defeat Devimon after T.K.'s partner Digimon, Patamon Digivolves to Angemon.[11]
After Devimon's defeat, The DigiDestined are contacted by a man named Gennai who instructs them on the next phase of their adventure.[12] When a Kuwagamon attacks the DigiDestined, Piximon appears and saves them. Whilst training with him, Izzy finds his "Crest of Knowledge".[51] A short while later, Izzy receives a message from a Digimon in danger, claiming to know where the last crest can be found. Motivated by this, the DigiDestined set off to free the imprisoned Digimon, Datamon but as they are trying to free him, Etemon attacks them. As they try to fend him off, Datamon escapes, taking Sora and Biyomon along with him.[71] Izzy is quick to point out that Sora may still be located somewhere in the pyramid, which ultimately leads to Tai rescuing her.[34] After Etemon's defeat, Tai and Agumon are transported back to the real world, prompting Izzy and the other DigiDestined to split up and find him. During this time, Izzy and Tentomon end up in Vademon's dimension and Izzy is tricked into giving up his curiosity, causing his mind to become an accepting one that does not question anything. Tentomon tries but fails to snap Izzy out of it and slowly regresses until he reverts to his weakest form, Pabumon. This brings Izzy back to his senses and allows Pabumon to Digivolve into his ultimate form, MegaKabuterimon who then destroys Vademon's dimension and defeats the evil Digimon himself.[80]
After reuniting with his allies and reassembling their group, Izzy and the others follow Myotismon back to the real world after learning of his scheme to find and kill the eighth DigiDestined child. After Myotismon's first defeat at the hands of Angewomon,[18] Izzy's parents decide to tell him that he was adopted. Izzy reveals that he had heard them talking about it one night and that he had tried to forget about what he had heard by focusing on computers. Izzy's parents assure him that they love him and Izzy accepts them as his real parents. During this time, Myotismon returns as VenomMyotismon but WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon manage to defeat him with the help of the other DigiDestined Digimon.[20] After his defeat, the DigiDestined are forced to return to the Digital World to do battle against The Dark Masters.[21] Shortly after returning, Izzy discovers that WarGreymon is equipped with "Dramon Destroyers", which are particularly effective against Digimon with "Dramon" in their name. This subsequently leads to the defeats of MetalSeadramon[81] and Machinedramon[82] at the hands of WarGreymon. After reuniting with his allies and defeating Piedmon,[57] the last of the four Dark Masters and later, Apocalymon as well, Izzy and his friends are forced to leave the Digital World as it begins its restoration.[22]
Whilst on summer vacation, Izzy discovers a virus on the internet that is infecting a Digi-Egg, causing it to become corrupted and resulting in the birth of Diaboromon. After alerting the others, Izzy arrives at Tai's house and together, they watch the ensuing battle between WarGreymon, MetalGarurumon and Diaboromon on the internet. WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon eventually DNA Digivolve into Omnimon but Diaboromon is too quick for him, always jumping to somewhere else whenever Omnimon spots him. Remembering how the high volume of e-mails being sent to his computer had slowed down WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon, Izzy devises a plan to slow Diaboromon down in the same way by instead, forwarding all those e-mails to him. His plan works and Omnimon succeeds in defeating Diaboromon.[3]
In the sequel, Digimon Adventure 02 Izzy makes fewer appearances as he relinquishes most of his responsibilities to Cody Hida. However, he continues to aid the new generation of DigiDestined by using his computing expertise to monitor the Digital World and alert them about any problems. With Willis' help, Izzy discovers that the new Digivices given to the new generation of DigiDestined have three functions and subsequently dubs them D3's. As the new DigiDestined battle against the Digimon Emperor, Izzy devises a plan to invade his base by using Cody's information on pipelines that cross with the Emperor's base. In Digimon Adventure tri., Izzy makes use of his expertise to start-up new companies in the IT business and refits his office as a base of operations once the DigiDestined reunite, creating a program that allows their Digimon to instantly travel back and forth between the monitors there and every display in the city. He also developed a crush on Mimi and starts looking for ways to win her affection.

Mimi Tachikawa
Voiced by: Ai Maeda (TV), Hitomi Yoshida (tri.) (Japanese); Philece Sampler (English)
Mimi Tachikawa (太刀川 ミミ Tachikawa Mimi) is a member of the original DigiDestined. She is characterized by her blunt and outspoken nature. Mimi lives with her parents in Odaiba as an only child, although an error occurs in the English dub where Mimi mentions having a baby brother. Mimi was most affected by the events taking place around The DigiDestined, to the point where she refused to fight as she did not want any more of their Digimon friends from getting hurt. However, she eventually realizes that she has to fight in order to save the Digital World.[83][84]
When Mimi is separated from the rest of her group after Devimon divides File Island into separate fragments, she remains with Palmon during this time until they reunite with the rest of their group at The Primary Village after protecting T.K. from Leomon who had been under the control of a Black Gear at the time. Soon afterwards, Mimi and the others learn about their role as the DigiDestined and subsequently defeat Devimon after T.K.'s partner Digimon, Patamon Digivolves to Angemon.[11]
After Devimon's defeat, The DigiDestined are contacted by a man named Gennai who instructs them on the next phase of their adventure.[12] After leaving File Island, Mimi and her allies travel to the Server Continent where they eventually end up in a desert. During this time, Mimi tries to make Tai feel better after he had caused Agumon to Dark Digivolve into SkullGreymon. When a large cruise ship appears before them all, Mimi manages to convince a Numemon on board to let them on. However, the ship is run by Kokatorimon, a servant of Etemon who begins taking out the DigiDestined and their Digimon by turning them into stone. After escaping the ship, Kokatorimon continues to pursue them, forcing them to seek refuge behind a large cactus where they find Mimi's "Crest of Sincerity".[85] After Etemon's defeat, Tai and Agumon are transported back to the real world, prompting Mimi and the other DigiDestined to split up and find him. During this time, Mimi and Palmon meet a group of Gekomon and Otamamon who wait on Mimi hand on foot, treating her as though she is a princess so that she will sing and wake up their master, ShogunGekomon. Tai and Joe eventually show up and fail to get Mimi to leave with them. However, she comes to her senses after having a nightmare and manages to wake ShogunGekomon up by singing but he attacks her and her friends. After his defeat at the hands of MetalGreymon, Mimi leaves with Tai and Joe to find the rest of their group.[73]
After reuniting with her allies and reassembling their group, Mimi and the others follow Myotismon back to the real world after learning of his scheme to find and kill the eighth DigiDestined child. Whilst pursuing Myotismon and his forces, Mimi, Sora and Palmon are captured by a horde of Bakemon led by Phantomon and held captive. They are attacked by a DarkTyrannomon but Palmon manages to Digivolve into her Ultimate form, Lillymon and stops him.[35] At this point, Myotismon intervenes and defeats Lillymon but Birdramon appears and rescues Sora.[75] Mimi is left behind but is later rescued by Tai and together, they eventually reunite with their allies and aid Angewomon in defeating Myotismon[18] before defeating him a second time after he returns as VenomMyotismon.[20] After VenomMyotismon's defeat, Mimi and the other DigiDestined are forced to return to the Digital World to do battle against The Dark Masters.[21] Shortly afterwards, a heated argument erupts between Tai and Matt, which causes Mimi to leave the group as she doesn't want to fight anymore or see anyone get hurt.[1] Joe joins her so that she doesn't have to be alone. During this time, they begin gathering allies to aid them in their battle against The Dark Masters. Mimi eventually leads these allies into battle against Piedmon where she is reunited with the other DigiDestined and together, they all manage to defeat him.[41] After defeating Apocalymon alongside the other DigiDestined, Mimi and her friends are forced to leave the Digital World as it begins its restoration.[22]
During the events of Digimon Adventure 02, Mimi has moved to New York City and dyed her hair pink. Despite the move, Mimi manages to make her way to the Digital World on occasion. In the events of Digimon Hurricane Landing!/Supreme Evolution! The Golden Digimentals, removed from Digimon: The Movie, Mimi was giving T.K. and Kari a tour of New York before she was captured by Wendigomon, is de-aged until Davis and Willis defeat him.[24][86] Mimi is also featured in supplementary audio dramas released on CD during the television series' run, most of which consist of miscellaneous adventures with the other DigiDestined that do not relate to the overall plot of the show. These include Mimi comically battling Kari over identifying whom Izzy's love letter is addressed to[87] and being captured by Boltmon on Valentine's Day.[26] In an audio drama released years after the end of Digimon Adventure 02, which takes place between Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02, Mimi documents her new life in New York as well as the September 11 attacks, which took place shortly after she arrived.[88] In Digimon Adventure tri., Mimi returns to Japan and attends high school alongside Tai, Matt, Sora, and Izzy, having trouble to adapt to her new environment due to her ever outspoken personality. However, thanks to Joe's encouragement, Mimi manages to clear her insecurities as well and have Palmon Mega Digivolve into Rosemon.
Mimi's character was designed for the pilot movie storyboard by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. In an exclusive interview released with the Digimon Adventure DVD box on December 21, 2007, producer Satoru Nishizono revealed that as the staff had agreed on deciding Tai's name, he had tried to name the other characters similarly with kanji that related to "luck".[28] In a series of online polls conducted on Toei Animation's Digimon website, Mimi was ranked 6th by Japanese voters as Favorite DigiDestined.[29] When the same question was asked three more times, her rank rose to 3rd,[30] fell to 9th,[31] and failed to chart on the final poll.[32] Mimi is ranked first as the DigiDestined who voters related the most to.[64]

Joe Kido
Voiced by: Masami Kikuchi (TV), Junya Ikeda (tri.) (Japanese); Michael Lindsay (TV), Robbie Daymond (tri.) (English)
Joe Kido, known in Japan as Jō Kido (城戸 丈 Kido Jō), is a member of the original DigiDestined. In the Japanese anime, Joe has two older brothers, named Shin and Shuu; in the English dub, he only has one brother named Jim. Joe's father had hoped that both boys would become doctors, a tradition which had existed since the Edo period. Joe is the bearer of the Crest of Reliability (Faithfulness/Sincerity/Integrity in Japan).[89]
As the DigiDestined continue to journey throughout File Island, Joe begins to feel more and more responsible for the group's safety as he is the eldest, but his tendency to panic means the group looks to Tai, Matt and Sora when making choices. On the fourth day in the Digital World, Joe attempts to reason with Tai and Matt when they argue over whether to climb Infinity Mountain, but only succeeds in aggravating the situation. Joe then decides to climb the mountain himself, and sneaks off in the night, although Gomamon tags along. Having climbed a considerable distance by dawn, the duo are attacked by Unimon who is under the control of a black gear. Sora, Tai, Birdramon and Greymon arrive, but Unimon outmaneuevers both Digimon, prompting Joe to jump onto his back to extract the black gear. His actions cause Gomamon to Digivolve into Ikkakukmon who then destroys the black gear and frees Unimon from its control.[90] Soon afterwards however, Joe and Gomamon become separated from their group as Devimon divides File Island into separate fragments, and end up drifting on their hotel bed in the sea. After escaping an ambush by Ogremon, Joe and Gomamon are fished out of the water by Sora and Biyomon. They survive the Bakamon holiday, and set for Infinity Mountain. They arrive in the middle of final battle with Devimon, although both partners are unable to defeat Devimon, who is only destroyed when T.K.'s partner digimon, Patamon Digivolves to Angemon. Soon afterwards, Joe and the others learn about their role as the DigiDestined [11]
After Devimon's defeat, The DigiDestined are contacted by a man named Gennai who instructs them on the next phase of their adventure.[12] After leaving File Island, Joe and his allies travel to the Server Continent where they eventually wind up in the desert. Whilst searching for his crest, Joe and the others are trapped by Etemon in a soccer goal and are forced to confront a Greymon. As they dig their way out of the trap, they come across Joe's "Crest of Reliability" and eventually manage to escape.[91] When Tai and Agumon are transported back to the real world after Etemon's defeat, Joe and the other DigiDestined split up to find him. During this time, DemiDevimon leads Joe and Gomamon to a restaurant where they order a large meal but they are not able to pay for the meal as Digitamamon, the owner of the restaurant, only accepts money from the real world, forcing Joe to work off their debt. Matt and Gabumon arrive at the restaurant a short while later and Matt elects to stay with Joe to help him work off his debt. However, Matt becomes increasingly frustrated with Joe when he continually causes accidents which forces them to continue working. They are both eventually rescued by WereGarurumon. After the battle, the boys decide to split up into groups (with Joe joining Tai) to follow separate readings on their Digivices in the hopes that it will lead them to their friends.[53] After reuniting with his allies and reassembling their group, Joe and the others follow Myotismon back to the real world after learning of his scheme to find and kill the eighth DigiDestined child.
Whilst pursuing Myotismon and his forces, Joe and T.K. are attacked by one of his henchman, MegaSeadramon and thrown into the water. When Joe sacrifices himself to keep T.K. afloat, he activates his crest, allowing Ikkakumon to Digivolve into his ultimate form, Zudomon who rescues them before defeating MegaSeadramon. After the battle, they find Wizardmon in the water with Kari's tag and crest.[75] They eventually reunite with their allies and aid Angewomon in defeating Myotismon[18] before defeating him a second time after he returns as VenomMyotismon.[20] After VenomMyotismon's defeat, Joe and the other DigiDestined are forced to return to the Digital World to do battle against The Dark Masters.[21] Shortly afterwards however, a heated argument erupts between Tai and Matt, which causes the DigiDestined to disband temporarily.[1] Joe decides to stay with Mimi during this time so that she doesn't have to be alone and together, they begin gathering allies to aid them in their battle against The Dark Masters. When they arrive at the Primary Village however, Joe decides to leave Mimi with the Digimon allies they have gathered to go and search for Matt but insists that he must do this alone as he hopes to figure out his place within their group.[92] Joe and Gomamon reunite with Matt and Gabumon soon afterwards and together, they help Sora to overcome her doubts[56] before reuniting with the rest of their allies to defeat Piedmon,[57] the last of the Dark Masters and later, Apocalymon as well. After Apocalymon's defeat, Joe and his friends are forced to leave the Digital World as it begins its restoration.[22]
During the events Digimon Adventure 02, having enrolled at a different middle school in the aftermath of the movie Our War Game, Joe makes fewer appearances out of the other original DigiDestined as he is trying to enroll in a private school. However, Joe does manage to provide some assistance and guidance to Cody Hida at his spare time.[23] In Digimon Adventure tri., Joe finds himself in difficulties on his entrance exam studies and hesitates upon becoming a DigiDestined once more, to the point of ignoring the others' plea for his assistance against the new threats from the Digital World when they first appear, leading to a fallout with Gomamon. However, once he hears that his Digimon partner is in danger, he regains the will to fight and attains the power to have him Mega Digivolve into Vikemon.
Gomamon
Voiced by: Junko Takeuchi (Japanese); R. Martin Klein[93] (English), Michael Sorich (Zudomon)
Gomamon (ゴマモン) is a seal-like Sea-Animal Digimon with purple markings and spots all over his body as a design as well as some orange hair on the back of his head. Takeru "T.K." Takaishi
Voiced by: Hiroko Konishi (Age 8, Series), Megumi Han (Age 8, Videogame), Taisuke Yamamoto (Age 11), Hiroaki Hirata (Epilogue), Junya Enoki (tri.) (Japanese); Wendee Lee (Age 9), Doug Erholtz (Age 13, Epilogue), Johnny Yong Bosch (tri.) (English)[8][23][94][94][95]
Takeru "T.K." Takaishi, known simply as Takeru Takaishi (高石 タケル Takaishi Takeru) in Japan, is a member of both the original DigiDestined and the second group of DigiDestined. He is gentle, sweet-natured, and generous.[96] He is also obedient and follows the DigiDestined's lead without complaints. He also happens to be Matt Ishida's younger brother, though the English dub made an error that they are half-brothers.[97] He is also described as Kari Kamiya's "equal."[98]
Unlike the other DigiDestined, T.K. originally left Sangenjaya instead of Odaiba with his mother, journalist Nancy Takaishi, due to a divorce between her and his father who Matt lives with.[7] Despite not fully remembering it, T.K. is still affected by it and does not openly talk about it.[47] At the start of the series, T.K looks up to Matt and attempts to be brave to "impress" him,[6] before he eventually open up to the other DigiDestined as well, particularly Tai.[8] While separated from the others after Devimon divides File Island into fragments, T.K. and Patamon ended up at the Primary Village, a place where Digimon are born. After meeting and befriending Elecmon,[99] they are attacked by Leomon (who is under the control of black gears), forcing them to run and hide but they are found by Ogremon. However, the other DigiDestined appear and save them by freeing Leomon from the black gears' control and forcing Ogremon to retreat.
During the final fight with Devimon soon after though he hid the trauma from the experience, T.K. was forced to watch Patamon Digivolve to Angemon and sacrifice himself to destroy Devimon. But T.K's sadness is eased when Angemon's data reformatted into a Digi-Egg and the child eventually finds his Crest of Hope while Patamon matures to usual form overtime.[11][52][71] Found by Tai and Agumon after they revealed from the real world, after nearly being poisoned by DemiDevimon before Patamon drives him away, T.K. helps in finding Matt, Gabumon, Joe and Gomamon after the four end up in debt to Digitamamon. After the chaos that followed, T.K. accompanies Matt as they eventually find Izzy.[100] After reuniting with his allies and reassembling their group, T.K. and the others follow Myotismon back to the real world after learning of his scheme to find and kill the eighth DigiDestined child.
While he and Matt search for the Eighth Child around the Shibuya district, T.K. attempts to look for Patamon after a misunderstanding before he and his brother run into Pumpkinmon and Gotsumon and end up witnessing their deaths by Myotismon when they refuse to harm the humans.[101] The following day, reaching Odaiba with Joe's help, T.K. reunites with the other DigiDestined to aid in defeating Myotismon[18] before defeating him a second time after he returns as VenomMyotismon.[20] After VenomMyotismon's defeat, T.K. and the other DigiDestined are forced to return to the Digital World to do battle against The Dark Masters.[21]
When the DigiDestined encounter Puppetmon, separated from Patamon, T.K. agrees to play a deadly game of hide and go seek with him to save Matt's life. Luckily, proving himself to be capable on his own, T.K. manages to outwit Puppetmon and destroys a number of devices that the Dark Master used to control the forest before escaping and reuniting with the rest of his group.[81] This event causes Matt to leave the group, as he comes to realize his little brother no longer needs his protection, and becomes uncertain of his place in the group. After Matt and Tai come to blows, and the DigiDestined learn how they were chosen, Matt leaves again, but chooses to have T.K. with Tai. T.K. subsequently leads the group to Puppetmon's mansion, and the battle that follows leads to Puppetmon being destroyed.
T.K. begins to show greater responsibility in the fight against Machinedramon, protecting Kari on Tai's instruction even after they are thrown into the sewers. He assists in the liberation of the Numemon from Warumonzaemon, and witnesses their sacrifice that gives Kari the mysterious energy to have WarGreymon destroy Machinedramon. In the final battle against Piedmon, T.K. is sent with Sora to find Matt and the others, although it is Sora who needs rescuing from her pit, with the help of Joe and Matt. When they return to the peak of Spiral Mountain, T.K. is left as Kari's protector with Patamon when Piedmon turns the children into key-chains. As Piedmon throws them to their deaths, T.K's refusal to give up hope results in Angemon digivolving to MagnaAngemon who rescues the other children and destroys Piedmon. T.K. joins the final battle against Apocalymon, and vows to meet Patamon again when he is forced to return home.
In the sequel, Digimon Adventure 02, T.K. and his mother relocate to a new apartment building in Odaiba, where he becomes neighbors with Cody Hida and Yolei Inoue, two new members of the new generation of DigiDestined. Although much of his physical appearance has changed, particularly his height, his gentle personality has remained.[102] T.K. is also featured in supplementary audio dramas released on CD during the television series' run, most of which consist miscellaneous adventures with the other DigiDestined that do not relate to the overall plot of the show. These include a battle T.K. has in his dream during New Years[25] and tap dancing to distract Boltmon on Valentine's Day.[26] In an audio drama released years after the end of Digimon Adventure 02, T.K. is heard compiling a novel about his adventures in the Digital World.[103]
T.K.'s character was designed for the pilot movie storyboard by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. In an exclusive interview released with the Digimon Adventure DVD box on December 21, 2007, producer Satoru Nishizono revealed that as the staff had agreed on deciding Tai's name, he had tried to name the other characters similarly with kanji that related to "luck."[28] Initially, T.K. was unpopular with the viewers, but Digimon Adventure 02 saw a rise in his popularity. In a series of online polls conducted on Toei Animation's Digimon website, T.K. was ranked 7th by Japanese voters as Favorite DigiDestined.[29] When the same question was asked two more times, his rank rose to 2nd,[30] but fell to 3rd.[31][32] T.K. is also ranked 1st as whom the voters would want as a younger brother[61] and as the DigiDestined whom the voters thought was the strongest,.[67] He placed 2nd as the DigiDestined voters would want to switch places with[60] and as the best-looking DigiDestined in the winter.[62] When voters were asked which DigiDestined they would want as their boyfriend, T.K. placed in 3rd.[63]

That entity was later revealed in Digimon Adventure Tri to be a sentient program known as Homeostasis (ホメオスタシス) whose purpose is the stabilization of the human and Digital Worlds.
In the sequel, Digimon Adventure 02, Kari has matured into a "smiling, charmingly energetic, and bright girl", but has also become "mischievous" and "playful". She now dons a digital camera as a trademark item instead of her camp whistle, which she gave to Gatomon at the end of the first season.[106] Joining the new DigiDestined, Kari obtained the Digi-egg of Light (光のデジメンタル Hikari no dejimentaru). Davis Motomiya develops an unrequited crush on her and vies for her affections several times.[107]
Kari was designed for the pilot movie storyboard by Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. Gatomon accompanied Myotismon and his army in the assault on the Real World in the search of the Eighth Child, Gatomon found Kari yet could not silence her. This led to Wizardmon helping Gatomon gain closure by helping reveal her to be the partner of the Eighth DigiDestined, Kari. Gennai
- Young Voiced by: Hiroaki Hirata (Japanese); Jeff Nimoy, Steven Blum (Series Finale) (English)
- Old Voiced by: Joji Yanami (Japanese); Mike Reynolds (English)
Gennai (ゲンナイ Gennai) is a data-based human in the form of an old man who serves as the DigiDestined's guide after their battle with Devimon. He contacts the DigiDestined to ask them to head to the continent of Server to defeat the powerful enemies there, and informs them that the partner Digimon have the potential to Digivolve with powers of Crests and Tags. He appears to the children after the disastrous Digivolution of SkullGreymon to warn the children of the risks involved. He is not seen again for some time after this, even when Tai and Agumon disappear following Etemon's destruction. Izzy's attempts to find Gennai end when Vademon captures him. Gennai later contacts the children after Izzy escapes, and provides him with a Digimon analyser for his computer.
After the children reunite, Gennai makes contact to inform them of an eighth DigiDestined, and that Myotismon plans to enter the real world to kill the child. When the children's first attempt to follow Myotismon is foiled, Gennai guides them to his home under a lake, and the children meet him in person for the first time. Gennai explains the gate to the real world must be opened with a set of cards, although he does not tell the DigiDestined which combination will send them home. Gennai also modifies Izzy's computer further, enabling him to make contact by email in both the real and Digital Worlds, which he uses on several occasions to warn Izzy of Digimon attacks, and to explain the prophecy concerning Myotismon's return.
During Kari's possession in the fight against the Dark Masters, it was revealed that a younger Gennai, alongside fellow data-humans, assisted in creating the DigiDestined's Digimon to fight against the Dark Masters. However, Piedmon slaughtered his friends, and he was forced to escape with the DigiDestined's Digivices and Digimons' eggs, although the one that held Gatomon was lost in the journey to File Island. After the final battle against Piedmon, Gennai delivers another revelation; the DigiDestined are not the first children to have come to the Digital World - a group of children was previously summoned to destroy an evil that came from behind the Wall of Fire, a barrier behind which the most powerful evil Digimon are trapped, and distorted the time and space between the real and Digital Worlds. The arrival of another evil force created the Dark Masters, and threatened the fabric of reality once again. The current group of Dgidestined were chosen to destroy this threat, which is shortly revealed to be Apocalymon. After his defeat, Gennai tells the children to return home, although they return a year later to give up the power of their Crests to repair the damage done to both worlds.
In the second series, Gennai regains his youthful appearance as he meets his old friend Azulongmon and is entrusted with one of his DigiCores to give to the DigiDestined on Christmas Day. Gennai then reveals he, along with other members of his kind, have been working to remove all information gathered by humans regarding the Digital World, to protect it from unfriendly interest. Gennai later appears in the series finale, revealing to have possessed Gatomon's Tail Ring the entire time as he explains that was so it can Armor & DNA Digivolve like the others.
- Benjamin (ベニヤミン): An America-based clone who explains to Davis the nature of he and his fellow Gennai clones. Voiced by Michael Lindsay in the English dub.
- Jackie (ジャッキー Jakkī): A China-based clone who helps Izzy and Kari with the language barrier between them and the Poi Brothers. Voiced by Jeff Nimoy in the English dub.
- Hogan (ユーカリプトス Yūkariputosu, Eucalyptus): An Australia-based clone who first appeared dressed as Santa Claus in a full swimsuit and water shoes. Voiced by Neil Kaplan in the English dub.
- José (ホセ Hose): A Mexico-based clone. Voiced by Michael Sorich in the English dub.
- Ilya (イリヤ Iriya): A Russia-based clone. Voiced by Neil Kaplan in the English dub.
Gennai is briefly mentioned by Daigo and Maki in Digimon Adventure tri. as the one who provided the government with the resources to deal with the infected Digimon until they became too strong to handle without the DigiDestined's help.
Another Gennai, initially appearing as Ken in his Digimon Emperor persona, is seeking to capture Meicoomon for unknown reasons. When he first appears before the children, the mysterious Gennai pretends to kidnap Meicoomon while sending Imperialdramon to fight them, prompting Palmon and Gomamon to Digivolve to the Mega level. He is later seen watching Tai and the others reuniting with their partners at the rebooted Digital World beside Maki, who had been secretly working with him. He later attacks Meiko while having reboot versions of Machinedramon and MetalSeadramon hold the DigiDestined off.
This dark iteration of Gennai is a servant of Yggdrasil, and has shown tendencies that clash with his original incarnation. One of these traits includes his malicious and sadistic demeanor, as well as his unhinged and psychotic behavior. He claims to be a supporter of the Digimon, stating that humans have made the Digimon their servants. He wants to separate the Digital World entirely from the Human World, despite the intimate and symbiotic connections between the two realities. Among his other disturbing actions was his manhandling of Sora, having animalistically licked her face during his assault on her and Biyomon in the jungle. This could be interpreted as having both megolomaniacal and sexual undertones, though the latter is subject to interpretation.
Antagonists
Apocalymon
- Voiced by: Chikao Ōtsuka (Japanese); Paul St. Peter (English)
Apocalymon is the primary antagonist of the Digimon Adventure season, debuting in the final episodes (as the final villain) as the one responsible for creating the chaos in the Digital World, creating Devimon, Myotismon, and the Dark Masters. He reveals that he was born from the data of Digimon who had died instead of digivolving, and that their sadness and anger fills his very being, causing him to be depressed and somewhat suicidal and self-harming (when giving his monologue to the DigiDestined he even scratched himself deeply spilling a greenish blood from his wounds); this led him to wage war against the joyful Digital World, in order to share his suffering. In the Japanese version he refers to himself as "we", possibly because of his nature of being composed of the many Digimon whose data composes him, and as a reference to the Biblical Legion. After demonstrating his ability to use the techniques of Digimon the DigiDestined defeated, he uses his "Reverse Digivolve" attack to revert all of the DigiDestined's Digimon back into their default forms before then destroying the tags and crests. Apocalymon then uses his power to delete the DigiDestined and their Digimon, sending them to the Data World until they realize that they had the true crest powers within them all along, and they are able to rematerialize in the Digital World with their partners in their strongest forms for the true fight against Apocalymon. After the other Digimon destroy his Death Claws, WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon destroy his humanoid form. Though they think they have won, Apocalymon speaks, and explains that those were only minor parts of him. He performs his suicidal ultimate attack, Total Annihilation, in a last-ditch effort to destroy the DigiDestined as well as the entire dimensional space, but the DigiDestined are able to use their Digivices to contain the blast, and only Apocalymon is destroyed.
Parrotmon
- Voiced by: David Lodge
Parrotmon is a large bird-like Digimon who appeared in Highton View Terrace after the original Koromon. He engaged the evolved Agumon in battle, causing him to digivolve into Greymon. The two battled in Highton View Terrace, until Greymon fired an pyrokinetic attack that destroyed both of them. Parrotmon's presence led to higher powers in the Digital World selecting the eight DigiDestined and crafting their Crests. The battle in Highton View Terrace was forgotten by all who witnessed it, though Kari had vague memories of meeting Koromon before. Parrotmon and Greymon's battle appears as flashbacks in Adventure, and as the first act of Digimon the Movie.
Devimon
- Voiced by: Kaneto Shiozawa (Japanese); Tom Wyner (English)
Devimon is the first antagonist to face the DigiDestined, appearing as a long-armed, winged, demonic figure who can enslave enemies with his "Touch of Evil". He is responsible for enslaving File Island with his Black Gears, and hiding the Tags and Crests. Devimon controls the Black Gears, which perform multiple tasks for him. The Black Gears are able to brainwash Digimon into being his servants until they are removed. Multiple gears empowering a Digimon can alter their power and physical size as seen with Leomon. Devimon operates from his fortress atop Infinity Mountain, where he observes the DigiDestined until he employs Leomon and Ogremon into his service. Revealing himself to the children, Devimon uses the Black Gears to destroy File Island and send its numerous pieces across the Digital World, splitting up the DigiDestined as well. They reuntie and confront Devimon, who absorbs the Black Gears to become a giant and defeats all the Digimon save Patamon, who digivolves for the first time into Angemon and destroys Devimon.
Devimon reappears in Digimon Adventure 02, his body surviving within a dark whirlpool that is discovered by the Digimon Emperor, who decides to add Devimon's data to his creation Kimeramon. Devimon warns Ken not to take the dark energies he possesses so lightly, and causes Kimeramon to become a mindless beast. T.K. witnesses Devimon's return, and confronts Ken, driven by his trauma of Angemon's temporary death upon destroying Devimon.

But a hit from MetalGreymon's GigaBlaster causes a vortex which seemingly destroys Etemon while sends Tai and his Digimon partner to Earth.

Myotismon
- Voiced by: Ryūzaburō Ōtomo, Toshiyuki Morikawa (02) (Japanese); Richard Epcar (English)
Myotismon (ヴァンデモン Vandemon, Vamdemon) is the most recurring antagonist in the series, an undead Digimon modeled after a vampire with a cruel and sadistic streak in his personality. Like a real vampire he has some vampiric powers similar to Count Dracula even in the human world like controlling the weather and sucking blood of human women, which he does when he gets to the real world. Among his actions prior to meeting the DigiDestined, Myotismon was the one responsible for conditioning Gatomon into a loyal minion. Having DemiDevimon keep the DigiDestined separate, Myotismon prepares to enter the real world to find and kill the Eighth Child whom would lead to his defeat. However, the DigiDestined follow him, and from August 1 to August 2, they race against his forces find the child. But once learning of Gatomon's relation to the Eighth Child, Myotismon isolates Odaiba from the rest of Tokyo to narrow his search. But once Kari reveals herself, a chain of events occur with Myotismon seemingly killed by Angewomon. However, Myotismon is not truly defeated as a prophecy found by Gennai came true with the evil Digimon resurrecting into the dark beast-type Digimon VenomMyotismon (ヴェノムヴァンデモン VenomuVandemon, VenomVamdemon). In the end, it took Agumon and Gabumon as WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon and the powers and crests of the DigiDestined Digimon group to destroy his body, but Myotismon's essence survives and he enters a host, Yukio Oikawa, after tricking him with the promise of entering the Digital World.
After years of scheming and subconsciously directing Oikawa into creating an elaborate plan to ensure his return to power, Myotismon reveals himself after having Oikawa take himself and the Dark Spore-possessed children to the World of Dreams. There, Myotismon leaves Oikawa's body while he absorbs the bloomed Dark Flowers to become the Dark Lord-type Digimon MaloMyotismon (ヴェノムヴァンデモン BeriaruVandemon, BelialVamdemon). After killing off Arukenimon and Mummymon, and attempting to place the children in delusions so there would be no interference from them, MaloMyotismon battles the new DigiDestined in the Digital World where he eventually loses his physical form and Imperialdramon destroys Myotismon for good.
DemiDevimon
- Voiced by: Kōki Miyata (Japanese); Derek Stephen Prince (English)
DemiDevimon (ピコデビモン Pikodebimon, PicoDevimon) is a spiteful bat-like Digimon who is a constant liar and whose great wording skills allow him to fool almost anyone with his sweet-sounding lies. DemiDevimon works as Myotismon's direct subordinate, and is sent to break up the DigiDestined from reuniting and to prevent their Crests' powers from activating. Not one for combat, he commonly resorts to lying and manipulation to have his way. He has a rivalry with Gatomon. DemiDevimon accompanies Myotismon to Tokyo where they search for the Eighth Child. DemiDevimon escapes Myotismon's initial defeat but oversees the prophecy that leads to his resurrection as VenomMyotismon, who then devours DemiDevimon as a "snack".
Dark Masters
The Dark Masters are a group that consists of four powerful Mega-level Digimon who took advantage of the DigiDestined returning to their world to conquer the Digital World and convert it into Spiral Mountain, which is divided by four territories. As revealed in fourth film of Digimon Adventure Tri, the Dark Masters existed during the adventure of the previous DigiDestined preceding Tai's group and were defeated when Tapirmon sacrificed himself to enable the other DigiDestined Digimon to digivolve into the Digimon Sovereigns and defeat them. The Adventure 02 series also reveals that the Dark Masters exact their revenge and sealed the Digimon Sovereigns from the Digital World prior to the DigiDestineds' return. As the DigiDestined learn, the defeat of each Dark Master causes their domain to cease and be eventually reconstituted into the recreated Digital World.
MetalSeadramon
Voiced by: Yuuto Kazama (Japanese); Doug Erholtz (English)
The first of the Dark Masters, MetalSeadramon rules over the Net Ocean, appearing as a large sea serpent covered in golden armour. Very arrogant and egotistical, MetalSeadramon is the first to engage the DigiDestined, using his army of Divermon to search the entire ocean for them. He does not kill his minions for entertainment like the other Dark Masters, but will execute them if they fail him, as he does with the clam-obsessed Scorpiomon. MetalSeadramon mortally wounds Whamon, prompting WarGreymon to drill through his body, killing him instantly. In Digimon Adventure Tri, a reboot version of MetalSeadramon attacks the DigiDestined before he is destroyed by Tai, Matt, and Kari's Digimon.
Puppetmon
Voiced by: Etsuko Kozakura (Japanese); David Lodge (English)
Puppetmon is the second member of the Dark Masters, appearing as a human-sized puppet inspired by Pinocchio who rules over Spiral Mountain's forest. He has the mind of a child, being immature, playful with a rotten temper while treating his minions as playthings that he destroys on a whim. He lives into a toy-like mansion which can transform into a giant wooden robot. While he can control others with strings and has an arsenal of real firearms, Puppetmon's signature weapon is his Bullet Hammer mallet, which can fire energy blasts.
When the DigiDestined entered his domain, Puppetmon separated them before abducting T.K. in order to play a deadly game of hide and seek with him. T.K. manages to outwit Puppetmon and then disable his means to control the forest before rejoining his friends. Furious at being tricked through his need to prove he is not friendless, Puppetmon arranges Cherrymon to turn Matt against the other DigiDestined while having Garbagemon attack them. Though the plan initially works, Puppetmon angrily executes Cherrymon when he implies that the DigiDestined possess something he does not. Puppetmon then watches as WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon face off, only to be blown away as a spirit intervenes to inform the children of how they were chosen to fight the Dark Masters.
Puppetmon later hunts Joe and Mimi after they depart the group for a time, but winds up fighting MetelEtemon to a draw instead. He then returns to his mansion where he is ambushed by Tai and most of the other Digidestined, as two of his disgruntled henchmen fire on him with his own cannon. Puppetmon then leads the children into a trap of his own by summoning his RedVegiemon army. After this battle turns against him as well, Puppetmon loses his hammer and is left badly outnumbered, so he uses his last trick to bring his mansion to life. As the Digidestined are occupied, Puppetmon flees, only to run into Matt and MetalGarurumon. Assuming that he can pit them against Tai and the others again, Puppetmon is shocked when his magical strings fail to have any effect. Matt taunts him into a fit of childish rage, so he foolishly charges and is blasted by MetalGarurumon at point-blank range. Puppetmon dies just as he realises that Cherrymon meant that he did not have friends.
Machinedramon
Voiced by: Hisao Egawa (Japanese); Dave Guerrie (English)
Machinedramon is a large hulking robotic dragon armed with two large cannons. He has an emotionless, cold, calculating mind and speaks with a whispery voice. He often resorts to military strategies in combat, including scorched earth strategies. He rules over Spiral Mountain's cityscape, and commands a vast army of machine Digimon. Machinedramon targets the DigiDestined as they explore the city, leading them to fall into the city's lower levels. Machinedramon later confronts them, destroying an army of Numemon in the process, much to Kari's horror, who causes Agumon to digivolve into WarGreymon to chop Machinedramon into three pieces, seemingly destroying him, although the Wanderswan games reveal that despite being cut into pieces, Machinedramon manages to survive, though barely, and DNA digivolves with a dying Kimeramon to form Millenniummon. In Digimon Adventure Tri, a reboot version of Machinedramon attacks the DigiDestined before he is destroyed by Phoenixmon, HerculesKabuterimon, and Seraphimon.
Piedmon
Voiced by: Chikao Ōtsuka (Japanese); Derek Stephen Prince (English)
The leader of the Dark Masters, Piedmon is a Majin-type Digimon dressed as a colourful pierrot who possesses a number of magical tricks, and uses four swords in combat. Piedmon speaks with a slight British accent and uses a number of theatre-related puns in dialogue. He maintains an upbeat but sadistic sense of humor, displaying a passion for fighting. Four years prior to the events of Adventure, Piedmon attacked Gennai's group who created the DigiDestined's Digi-Eggs, Tags, and Crests. Gennai escapes with the Digi-Eggs, while Piedmon obtained the Tags and Crests, meeting Devimon at some point and they hid them across Server. He rules from atop Spiral Mountain in a large observatory-funhouse building in a rocky wasteland.
Piedmon observes the actions of the other Dark Masters and does not engage the DigiDestined in combat until they arrive in his domain and defeated his lieutenant LadyDevimon. When all of the DigiDestined save Mimi reunite, Piedmon uses a number of magical cloths to turn them into keyrings. Only T.K., Kari, and Patamon were left with the two children nearly killed by Piedmon before they were saved by the newly digivolved MagnaAngemon who then restores their friends to normal. Though Piedmon responds with his army of Vilemon, his forces are defeated by the army of friends Mimi amassed to help the DigiDestined out. In the end, Piedmon is blasted by WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon into MagnaAngemon's Gate of Destiny, trapping the evil Digimon and ending the Dark Masters' reign.
Kimeramon
Kimeramon (キメラモン, Chimairamon) is a Composition Digimon created by Ken while as the Digimon Emperor to be his ideal Digimon partner to help him take over the Digital World, and he is seen working on it over a period of time. By that time, Ken synthesized various Digimon data to combine the best attributes into his creation. After acquiring the data remains of Devimon, manifesting in its upper arms, Ken completes Kimeramon. Though it was too powerful for the armored Digimon to fight, Devimon's data intensified Kimeramon's terrifying combat instinct and made it beyond Ken's control as it starts to runs amok while destroying everything in its path. Worried for Ken, Wormmon takes Davis to the power source of the base, the Digi-Egg of Miracles. Using it, Veemon becomes Magnamon. Although Magnamon puts up more of a fight, Kimeramon eventually overpowers him, and he is only able to destroy Kimeramon using the energy sacrificed by Wormmon.
Arukenimon
- Voiced by: Wakana Yamazaki (Japanese); Mari Devon (English)
Arukenimon (アルケニモン Arachnemon) is a spider-like Digimon who is extremely cunning with great intelligence but has an equally scary temper. Being created by Oikawa with his DNA synthesized into her data, Arukenimon can assume the form of a woman with silvery white hair in red and purple spider-themed clothing with large shades concealing her eyes. Overseeing Ken's actions as the Digimon Emperor from behind the scenes, Arukenimon becomes the central antagonist after the boy turns over a new leaf. At first, Arukenimon appeared before the DigiDestined in her human form as she uses his Spirit Needle hair to turn Control Spires into Digimon-like monsters that follow her orders. But in light of Paildramon's debut, Arukenimon lured the children into Giga House and used a flute to control the resident insect Digimon to kill them off for her. However, when that scheme failed, she decided to take drastic measures and shifted to her Digimon form. She fought the children and proved to be a formidable foe, but suffers a humiliating defeat before Mummymon saved her.
Bent on revenge for what she endured, Arukenimon created BlackWarGreymon to rid herself of the children. However, due to the one hundred Control Spires giving Black WarGreymon free will, Arukenimon refocuses her plan to destroy the Destiny Stones to throw off the balance of the Digital World. When BlackWarGreymon is motivated to destroy them, Arukenimon decided to hold off the DigiDestined to keep them from interfering. However, with divine intervention from the Digimon Sovereign Azulongmon, Arukenimon's plans are foiled.
Following this, Arukenimon and Mummymon turned to Oikawa as he instructed Arukenimon to open the Digital Gates in the entire world. During Christmas Day, as the DigiDestined traveled around the world and helped their foreign DigiDestined allies close the gates, Arukenimon and Mummymon drove around Tokyo in a truck and kidnapped twenty children. The following day, they kidnapped Ken as well, so that Oikawa could scan his Dark Spore and pass it on to the children. After this, Oikawa, Arukenimon and Mummymon ran off to hide in a vacation house in the mountains, but BlackWarGreymon came from the Digital World to destroy them. As BlackWarGreymon asked Arukenimon and Mummymon where they came from, Oikawa revealed their origins. While the revelation clearly shocked and troubled Arukenimon and Mummymon, Arukenimon preferred not to discuss it and focus her efforts on tracking the seeded children and protecting Oikawa as they hid back in his run-down apartment in Tokyo. In the end, Arukenimon was tortured and killed by MaloMyotismon as an excuse to test his newfound power on her.
Mummymon
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Japanese); Kirk Thornton (English)
Mummymon (マミーモン Mumīmon) is an undead Digimon who is seen in Arukenimon's company. Being created by Oikawa with his DNA synthesized into him, Mummymon dons a royal blue coat and hat, and wields a cane. Mummymon first appeared to the aid of Arukenimon after it was beaten by the DigiDestined at the Giga House. Following this, he began working together with her to destroy the balance of the Digital World. Mummymon was in love with Arukenimon, and tended to flirt with her instead of focusing on their mission, but Arukenimon always rejected him in her arrogance. Mummymon never took the rejection to heart, however, and remained optimistic and cheerful. Still, because of his loyalty to Arukenimon and general skill, he remained a formidable foe to the DigiDestined over the course of the series. When Arukenimon is killed to his horror, an enraged Mummymon attacks MaloMyotismon before the latter liquifies Mummymon using his "Crimson Mist" attack.

However his self-awareness had caused BlackWarGreymon to be confused about his purpose in life.
He is befriended by Agumon, but a severe pain in his body leads him to destroying the first Destiny Stone. After destroying the first Destiny Stone BlackWarGreymon sees Azulongmon in a vision and views him as a worthy opponent. BlackWarGreymon makes it his mission to destroy all the Destiny Stones in order to find and face Azulongmon, convinced that his battle with Azulongmon would solve his existential crisis. When Azulongmon finally does appear, BlackWarGreymon is easily defeated and the Sovereign tells him that all things have a purpose in life; BlackWarGreymon departs to find it.
BlackWarGreymon emerges in Tokyo to kill Oikawa for disrupting the balance of both Earth and the Digital World. Agumon receives a power boost from Azulongmon, allowing him to digivolve to WarGreymon, who then engaged his twin in battle but is convinced to depart. BlackWarGreymon returns again as Chikara Hida, Cody's grandfather, tries to talk Oikawa out of his plan, but he takes a mortal blow when Myotismon momentarily takes over Oikawa's body. Realizing the truth, BlackWarGreymon uses the last of his strength to seal the Highton View Terrace Gate to the Digital World in attempt to prevent Myotismon from re-entering the Digital World.
Yukio Oikawa
- Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Japanese); Jamieson Price (English)
Yukio Oikawa (及川 悠紀夫 Oikawa Yukio), considered the most tragic character in the series, is one of the few humans to have been aware of the Digimon's existence before the events of 1999. As a child in the 1970s, Oikawa was an extremely lonely and his only friend was Hiroki Hida, Cody's father. The two learned of the Digital World though were discouraged by Hiroki's father Chikara. Though forced to part, Oikawa and Hiroki promised each other to reach the Digital World together someday with Oikawa investigating the events at Highton View Terrace. But when Hiroki died years later, a distraught Oikawa felt betrayed as he was present at Tokyo Harbor in August 3, 1999. Seeing the DigiDestined depart to the Digital World, Oikawa saw it was possible to travel as his pleas for them to take him were not heard. In his moment of grief and weakness, Oikawa allowed Myotismon's spirit to possess him in return to enter the Digital World. Having forgotten the encounter, Oikawa was manipulated by Myotismon as his obsession with the Digital World became increasingly unhealthy with knowledge that he uses to create Arukenimon and Mummymon to the Digital World.
Soon after attending the funeral of his boss's son, Sam Ichijouji, Oikawa found the means of entering the Digital World through Ken upon sensing the Dark Spore and masterminded the boy's own descent into madness so he could weaken the boundaries between the worlds with the Control Spires. However, the interference of the DigiDestined thwarted Oikawa's plans through both Ken and later the destruction of the Destiny Stones before he decides that weakening the dimensional border from his side may bare more fruit. To that end, Oikawa has Arukenimon bio-emerge Digimon all over the world to keep the DigiDestined at bay while Arukenimon and Mummymon gather children with promises of bettering their lives. By the time the Daemon Corps go on the attack to get Ken, Oikawa reveals himself as he spirits Ken away to copy the Dark Spore data and transfer it into the children. After this, Oikawa and his group go into hiding so the copied Dark Spores can take effect, first hiding out in the mountain side before falling back to Oikawa's apartment building. There, Oikawa meets Cody Hida and becomes conflicted upon learning the boy is Hiroki's son. Fighting his personal guilt, Oikawa manages to absorb the power of the bloomed Dark Flower of Noriko Kawada. Though Chikara arrived to reason with Oikawa, Myotismon takes control of his body to kill the old man with BlackWarGreymon taking the mortal blow and realizing Oikawa is nothing more than a pawn.
Thought the DigiDestined hoped to take advantage of BlackWarGreymon's sacrifice to catch Oikawa off guard as he gathered all of the children together in Highton View Terrace, Oikawa was subconsciously motivated by Myotismon to take everyone to the World of Dreams under the impression that they are going to the Digital World. Realizing the truth, Oikawa regains his full memory of Myotismon as the evil Digimon leaves his body and renders him unconscious. Coming to as MaloMyotismon is destroyed, Oikawa learns that the evil Digimon took much of his life and is now on the verge of death. Though Cody tried to help Oikawa cross over, his body was beyond help and barely able to enter the Digital World to be with his Digimon partner Datrinimon. Knowing that he had little time left to live, Oikawa apologizes for his actions before using the World of Dreams to convert himself into data-based butterflies to repair the damaged Digital World.

He then launches nuclear missiles to wipe out the DigiDestined while cloning himself to make it impossible to prevent impact. Though WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon manage to destroy him as Omnimon, Diaboromon's data survived and reconstituted himself. He later orchestrates a scheme a few years later in Revenge of Diaboromon, using himself as a decoy to trap Omnimon, Angemon, Angewomon, and their partners in the internet while the Kuramon offshoots he created have entered the real world to converge and combine into Armageddomon to destroy Tokyo. Ryo Akiyama
Daigo Nishijima
- Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa (Japanese); Doug Erholtz (English)
Disguised as a substitute teacher in Tai's 11th grade calligraphy class, Daigo Nishijima (西島 大吾 Nishijima Daigo) is a government agent for an organization monitoring Digimon activity and was tasked to watch over him and the other DigiDestined in the school. It is revealed in the fourth film that Daigo was actually a member of the five original DigiDestined who preceded Tai and his friends, his partner LoaderLiomon digivolving into the Digimon Sovereign Baihumon during their final battle with the Dark Masters. Daigo appears to have been Tai's predecessor as his team's "goggle head," as shown in the flashbacks as evidenced by the goggles lying on the ground near his and LoaderLiomon's unconscious bodies during their final battle with the Dark Masters. Daigo's personality can be accurately described as warm, friendly, compassionate, and light-hearted. His past relationship with Maki Himekawa was founded on his desire to console her in her grief over the loss of her partner, Tapirmon. Daigo does what he can to make life easy on the current DigiDestined, most likely to empathize with them for their similar hardships. Daigo's extremely empathetic personality has put him at odds with Maki Himekawa, who puts professionalism ahead of her feelings for the most part. However, he appears determined to spare the current Digidestined from the tragic turn of events that scarred Maki, harboring a sense of survivor's guilt over how her Digimon had to die to enable the others to survive and assume their current forms.
Maki Himekawa
- Voiced by: Yuko Kaida (Japanese); Cherami Leigh (English)
Maki Himekawa (姫川 マキ Himekawa Maki) is Daigo's co-worker and superior in the government, with a more serious approach than him. They have known each other since they were students and Daigo hints that they were once a couple. She seems to be more involved with the Digimon incidents than she lets on, to the point of following the DigiDestined when they return to the Digital World looking for their partners. She also hides crucial information from Tai and the others for some reason yet unexplained until they discover it themselves, like the fact that Meicoomon was the cause of the Digimon infection or the disppearance of their fellow DigiDestined. It is revealed in the fourth film that Maki was one of the DigiDestined that preceded Tai's group, as well as Homeostasis' medium before Kari. This motivated Maki to aid Dark Gennai in rebooting the Digital World to be reunited with her Digimon Tapirmon, who sacrificed himself while as Megadramon to enable his fellow Digimon to digivolve into the Digimon Sovereigns. But Himekawa break down upon learning that Tapirmon does not remember her. While she once had many personality traits that Tai and Kari possessed when she was their age, Maki grew up becoming a stoic and cold workaholic whose obsession of being reunited with Tapirmon borders on madness.

Demidevimon is then exposed and Digitamamon fights the children, only to be sent flying by Weregarurumon. His diner falls into disrepair some time during the Dark Masters' reign and is ripped from its place in the Digital World, becoming part of Piedmon's wasteland.
Digitamamon later appears in the second season, having turned over a new leaf and wants to make a good living despite repeating his past mistakes. He falls victim to a Dark Spiral but is freed by Shurimon, befriending the DigiDestined. Frigimon escorts Tai and Agumon across the sea to find Matt and Gabumon, helping them fight Mojyamon. The two have a symbiotic relationship, but both are not very smart. After being purified by Mimi's Digivice, Sukamon and Chuumon fall in love with her and show her how to leap across to another part of File Island where Izzy and Tentomon are. The DigiDestined encounter Chuumon upon arriving on Spiral Mountain, where Chuumon reveals that Sukamon is dead after the Dark Masters took over. Chuumon protects Mimi from Piedmon, stabbed by a knife, and is deleted. However, he and Sukamon are resurrected with the Digital World's reboot, making a cameo in Adventure 02.
- Centarumon (ケンタルモン Kentarumon)

Gennai, Centarumon, Andromon, Elecmon, and Ogremon reunite with the DigiDestined following Apocalymon's defeat, witnessing the rebirth of the Digital World.
- Elecmon (エレキモン Erekimon)
- Voiced by: Yasuhiro Takato (Japanese); Michael Sorich (English)
- A Rookie-level Digimon who is the caretaker of Primary Village, where all Digimon are born from Digi-Eggs. When introduced, he is overprotective of the babies and quick to act, attacking T.K. and Patamon, thinking they would harm the young Digimon. Patamon and Elecmon have a tug of war match to settle their differences, with Patamon winning. Elecmon has a change of heart and befriends the two. He reappears after the Dark Masters took over in the remains of Primary Village, possessing Matt's discarded harmonica. He joins Mimi and Joe's army, and is overjoyed when Primary Village is restored.

Piximon comes to the aid of the DigiDestined against the Dark Masters, sending them to safety before dying while fighting the villains.
- Gekomon (ゲコモン), Otamamon (オタマモン), ShogunGekomon (トノサマゲコモン TonosamaGekomon)

- Otamamon: Voiced by: (Japanese); Dorothy Elias-Fahn, Wendee Lee (English)
- ShogunGekomon: Voiced by: Ginzo Matsuo (Japanese); Bob Papenbrook (English)
- A group of recurring amphibian Digimon, the frog-like champion Gekomon and the tadpole-like rookie Digimon Otamamon serve the huge frog-like ShogunGekomon, who fell asleep for three-hundred years after suffering from the depression of losing a singing contest. The Gekomon and Otamamon were told by DemiDevimon that Mimi was the one to wake their master with her singing voice. However, the Gekomon and Otamamon pampered Mimi to the point she took advantage of their generosity and practically made them her slaves as she has them remodeled their feudal castle into a European one to live in as a princess. Luckily, after realizing she is losing Palmon and her friends through her actions, Mimi manages to regain her senses and fulfill her promise of the amphibian Digimon. However, ShogunGekomon attacks everyone in a grumpy rage before MetalGreymon knocks the giant unconscious again. After Mimi and Joe separated from the others, they encounter some of the surviving Gekomon and Otamamon who reveal that their castle was destroyed by the Dark Masters who later rally their kin to assist the DigiDestined in the final battle against Piedmon and Vilemon.
- By the events of Digimon Adventure 02, the group encounter a small company of Gekomon and Otamamon alongside Mimi in the Night Forest, it is revealed that ShogunGekomon and his people rebuilt their castle with a feudal Japanese village surrounding the area. When the Digimon Emperor takes over their domain, members of ShogunGekomon's group were found hiding underground and offered hospitality to the DigiDestined. A Ninjamon slipped a Dark Spiral on ShogunGekomon's Chonmage while he and the DigiDestined were sleeping (as his solution to the Digimon Emperor taking over his territory was going to sleep and his love of sleeping was a running gag at this point), and so he went on a rampage before being knocked out after being tricked into attacking the Control Spire. After Davis joked about simply cutting off the Chonmage, which the lead Gekomon found insulting, the Armored Digimon proceed to destroy the Dark Spiral.
